Vinicius Junior Sparks Controversy with Goal Celebration in Lisbon
Real Madrid secured a significant victory against Benfica in the Champions League playoff on February 17, 2026, thanks to a stunning goal from Vinicius Junior in the 50th minute. However, the match was marred by controversy following the Brazilian forward’s celebratory antics, which ignited tensions among home fans and led to allegations of racial abuse.
After scoring, Vinicius celebrated with a dance near the corner flag, provoking an angry reaction from the Benfica supporters. Objects were thrown onto the pitch, escalating the situation. Shortly thereafter, Vinicius reported to the referee that he had been racially insulted by Benfica player Gianluca Prestiani, prompting a 10-minute pause in the game as the players left the field.
Referee Fransosa Letexier responded by signaling the alleged racial abuse with a crossed arms gesture, a protocol introduced by FIFA in May 2024 for such incidents. The game resumed after a brief interruption, with Real Madrid ultimately winning 1-0 following an additional 12 minutes of stoppage time, during which a thrown object struck Vinicius on the arm.
In a post-match statement on Instagram, Vinicius condemned the behavior of the fans, saying, “Racists are, above all, cowards. They must cover their mouths with shirts to show how weak they are.” He expressed frustration over receiving a yellow card for his goal celebration, questioning the rationale behind the decision. “Nothing that happened today is new in my life or in the life of my team,” he added, criticizing the handling of the situation.
Prestiani denied the allegations, stating, “I want to clarify that I did not make any racist remarks towards Vinicius. He misunderstood what he thought he heard.” The 20-year-old expressed regret over the threats he received from Real Madrid players following the incident.
The fallout from the incident has prompted UEFA to launch an investigation, while Benfica has characterized the claims against Prestiani as part of a “campaign of defamation.” If found guilty, Prestiani could face a minimum suspension of ten matches from European competitions.
Benfica released a statement on their social media platforms, contesting the claims made by Real Madrid players, emphasizing that “given the distance, the Real Madrid players could not have heard what they claim to have heard.” The club proclaimed its full support for Prestiani, asserting that his conduct has always reflected respect for opponents and the principles defining Benfica’s identity.
The situation has drawn notable reactions, including from Benfica’s head coach Jose Mourinho, who noted the diverging accounts provided by Vinicius and Prestiani regarding the incident. Mourinho remarked on the need for Vinicius to celebrate goals differently, suggesting that his repeated celebrations have led to recurring issues at various stadiums.
Criticism has been directed at Mourinho for his comments, with former players like Clarence Seedorf and Tio Walcott voicing their disapproval. Seedorf described Mourinho’s remarks as a “significant mistake” in attempting to justify racist behavior, while Walcott echoed that this was not the time for Mourinho to comment.
Vinicius’ experience with racial abuse is not isolated. The player has faced numerous incidents throughout his career, with five individuals receiving conditional prison sentences last year for racist harassment—marking a historic first in Spanish football.
The timeline of incidents involving Vinicius and racism in football is extensive, highlighting the ongoing challenges. For instance, in September 2022, Atletico Madrid condemned abusive chanting directed at him, while La Liga issued a strong statement against hate acts. In May 2023, Vinicius was targeted again during a match in Valencia, leading to further protests against the treatment he received.
As football grapples with the pervasive issue of racism, incidents like the one in Lisbon serve as painful reminders of the work that remains to be done in creating a more inclusive environment within the sport. The investigation by UEFA and the responses from involved parties may shape the future conduct of players and fans alike, as the football community seeks to address this critical issue.
