Local Shop Faces Closure as Community Urged to Support It

Residents of Crondall, a village near Farnham, are facing a critical moment as their only shop, Crondall Stores, struggles for survival. The shop, which also serves as the village post office, is calling on community members to support it amid increasing pressures from rising wholesale prices and competition from larger supermarkets and online retailers.

Akish Patel, the manager of Crondall Stores, stated that the shop currently sees only 100 to 150 regular customers daily, despite a village population of 1,800. To remain viable and cover operational costs, the shop requires at least 300 customers each day. “It’s the only shop in the village, so most people need it,” Mr. Patel remarked. “Otherwise, they’d have to go into town.”

The shop is vital for many residents, particularly the elderly, who rely on the local post office for essential services. Mr. Patel emphasized this point, saying, “Most of the older people use the post office, and they can’t park their cars elsewhere, so it’s very easy for them here.” He highlighted the difficulties faced by smaller businesses, noting the impact of escalating prices on both shop owners and customers.

With competition intensifying, Mr. Patel is optimistic about the future and is exploring plans to diversify services. He mentioned upcoming initiatives, including delivery options and newspaper distribution, set to launch in just two weeks. “That will encourage more people to come here,” he added.

Community support is essential for the shop’s longevity. Mr. Patel appealed to locals, saying, “Whoever comes here, we have plenty of loyal and regular customers—they like to visit every day. Just support local, stay local.” He believes that an additional 60 to 80 customers each day could significantly impact the shop’s viability.

While acknowledging that village shops may never compete with supermarkets on price or selection, Mr. Patel emphasized the unique value they offer. “If we want the convenience, service, and community spirit of a local store, it needs the support of the whole village,” he concluded.
