Nguyen Huong Giang, a Vietnamese beauty queen and advocate for transgender rights, has been officially confirmed as Vietnam’s representative for the upcoming 2025 Miss Universe pageant. This announcement was made on September 24, 2023, marking a significant milestone as Giang becomes the first transgender contestant to compete for Vietnam in this prestigious international event.

In an Instagram post on September 25, Giang expressed her excitement and the deeper significance of her participation. She stated that her inclusion in the competition serves as “a door to equality and hope, which is something no other major pageant had chosen to do.” Giang emphasized the empowering nature of the Miss Universe platform, highlighting that it celebrates all women, regardless of their backgrounds.

Breaking Stereotypes and Inspiring Change

Giang conveyed her desire to challenge societal stereotypes and inspire others through her journey. She stated, “Nothing is impossible, and it is never too late for any woman to use the Miss Universe platform to break stereotypes and give back to her community.” Her message resonates with many, as she aims to encourage individuals to pursue their dreams, regardless of their circumstances.

“This is not just a story about gender. It is a story about people, about faith,” Giang continued. She believes that with determination and effort, anyone can change their life trajectory, emphasizing that one’s starting point does not define their potential.

The announcement from Miss Universe Vietnam highlighted Giang’s impressive credentials and her multifaceted career as a singer, actress, model, and producer. They described her as an “elite representative,” noting her “feminine beauty, intelligence, confidence, boldness, and above all, a good heart that never stops trying.”

A Journey of Resilience and Representation

Giang’s journey to this point has not been without challenges. In 2023, she faced a fine of VND 55 million (approximately £1,550) for organizing an unauthorized transgender beauty contest. Nevertheless, her resilience and commitment to advocating for the transgender community have defined her career.

The Miss Universe pageant, which began in 1952, aims to empower women worldwide, and it has allowed transgender women to participate since 2012. The pageant has also opened its doors to married women and mothers since 2022. The current President, Raul Rocha Cantu, and the Chief Executive Officer of JKN Global Group, Anne Jakrajutatip, a transgender woman herself, continue to focus on inclusivity within the competition.

The 74th Miss Universe pageant is scheduled to take place in Thailand on November 21, 2024, and Giang’s participation is expected to draw significant attention, both for her groundbreaking role and her inspiring message of empowerment and equality.

As she prepares for the competition, Nguyen Huong Giang stands as a testament to the changing landscape of beauty pageants, where diversity and representation are increasingly celebrated.
