Uganda’s Museveni Wins Election, Extends 40-Year Rule by Five Years

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has secured victory in the recent elections, extending his long-standing rule for an additional five years. According to the Uganda Electoral Commission, Museveni received 72 percent of the votes, while his main opponent, Bobi Wine, garnered 25 percent. This victory marks Museveni’s seventh term in office, having first ascended to power in 1986.

The electoral process was marred by violence and allegations of fraud. Bobi Wine, a former pop star and political challenger, claimed that at least 21 people were killed in violence related to the elections, although authorities have only confirmed seven deaths. The situation has raised significant concerns over the integrity of the electoral process.

Internet Blackout and Observations

In the wake of the elections, the Ugandan government imposed an internet blackout, citing the need to prevent misinformation and violence. This decision has been met with criticism. Bobi Wine has called for the restoration of internet access, insisting that it is crucial for transparency and communication among citizens.

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who led the African Union’s observer mission, stated that the government should refrain from suspending internet access, especially so close to the elections. While six other candidates participated in the voting, none received more than 2 percent of the votes. Voter turnout was reported at 52.5 percent.

The electoral commission’s announcement has been met with mixed reactions. Observers from the African Union have indicated they found no evidence of ballot stuffing, which Bobi Wine had alleged. Nonetheless, the political climate remains tense as the nation grapples with the aftermath of the elections and the implications for democratic governance in Uganda.

With Museveni continuing his presidency, questions about the future of political pluralism and civil rights in Uganda are likely to dominate discussions in the months ahead.
