The Russian Embassy in Montenegro has issued a formal response to a letter from the editorial board of the newspaper Pobjeda. In its letter, the embassy expressed concern that the publication’s claims regarding alleged anti-Russian sentiment were not backed by specific examples. The embassy noted that Pobjeda is among the few media outlets providing space for the views of the Russian government.

The embassy’s initial statement highlighted an increase in anti-Russian articles in Pobjeda‘s online and print editions. It cited various articles, statements, and comments published recently that depict Russia in a negative light. According to the embassy, these remarks portray Pobjeda as intentionally misleading its readers and inciting anti-Russian feelings.

In its official communication, the embassy presented several examples of what it termed “unreliable facts and false claims” within the publication. The embassy referenced a recent statement by Friedrich Merc, who claimed that Russia is an European country and suggested that the European Union should find balance in its relations with Moscow. The embassy questioned the shift in rhetoric, suggesting that Donald Trump‘s actions might be compelling the EU to reconsider its stance towards what they termed its “greatest enemy.”

The embassy also pointed to various articles asserting that Russia prefers aggression over diplomacy and that it actively destabilizes regions beyond Montenegro. They referenced reports of young Ukrainian men from the area being mobilized into Russian armed forces, which they described as war crimes. The embassy emphasized that the atmosphere of fear in Russia is deeply rooted, with dissenters reportedly facing severe consequences.

Further, the embassy discussed the implications of Russia’s international isolation, including political, economic, diplomatic, cultural, and sporting dimensions, asserting that it has proven effective and must continue. They characterized Russia as a dangerous force that utilizes disinformation, sabotage, and cyberattacks to create chaos.

In a notable quote from the embassy, they stated, “We hope that the editorial board of Pobjeda will not view the evidence presented as political or diplomatic pressure but will take them into account as compelling arguments for an impartial, professional assessment of the previous message sent by the embassy.”

The letter concluded with an expression of gratitude for the attention given to the statements made by Russian officials and an openness to personal communication with the editorial team at Pobjeda.

This exchange underscores the ongoing tensions between Russia and Montenegro, amidst broader geopolitical dynamics affecting the region. The Russian Embassy’s response reflects its desire to counter allegations of hostility and assert its perspective amidst a challenging media landscape.
