Podgorica Mayor Addresses Mareza Canal and DG Arena Controversy

In a significant move to address long-standing issues surrounding the Mareza Canal, Saša Mujović, the Mayor of Podgorica, has announced the removal of illegal structures obstructing the waterway. This decision comes in response to recent flooding in the area, which has highlighted the urgent need for action. The Mareza Canal plays a crucial role in supplying water to various neighborhoods in Podgorica, particularly Mareze and Tološi, and the mayor emphasized that its functionality is a public interest.

“We have witnessed over twenty years of intense illegal construction affecting this canal,” Mujović stated during a briefing with the public broadcaster RTCG. He remarked that the recent floods served as a wake-up call, revealing the alarming reality of the situation. The mayor underscored that there will be no privileges for anyone involved, stating, “The law is the same for all, and public interest is above all else.”

Removal of Structures at DG Arena

The demolition of the concrete fence surrounding the DG Arena in Donja Gorica has begun, sparking protests among supporters of the local football club, FK Podgorica. Approximately thirty supporters gathered at the arena early this morning in an attempt to prevent the destruction of the fence and lighting fixtures built on the Mareza Canal. The planned removal of these fixtures is scheduled for Wednesday.

The Mareza Canal has been out of operation for several years and has become obstructed in multiple places. Investigations revealed that a lighting fixture and the concrete barrier at the DG Arena were buried within the canal. Consequently, the Inspection Authority has mandated the immediate removal of these structures to restore the canal’s functionality.

Prior to the demolition, a peaceful protest took place, involving local children who train at the stadium, along with their parents and coaches, who blocked access with machinery to prevent the workers from proceeding.

Alternative Proposals and Ongoing Discussions

In light of the ongoing situation, businessman Tomislav Čelebić proposed an alternative solution to the authorities. He suggested relocating the Mareza Canal rather than demolishing part of the DG Arena. This proposal includes plans to reroute the canal through a parcel of land owned by the Government of Montenegro, which is managed by the University of Montenegro.

As discussions continue, Mujović has called on the public to refrain from politicizing the issue, emphasizing that the actions taken are crucial for the welfare of the community. “We want to send a clear message that order and law will be upheld in this city,” he reiterated, reinforcing the commitment to prioritize the public interest over individual interests.

With the ongoing protests and varying opinions on the best course of action, the situation remains fluid. The mayor’s firm stance on enforcing regulations marks a pivotal moment in addressing both community concerns and environmental needs in Podgorica.
