Paris Photographer Captures Everyday Poetry with Smartphone Shot

French photographer Mélissa David captured a striking image of urban life in Paris using her smartphone while passing through a construction site in front of the city’s iconic City Hall. This photograph, taken on a sunny day, reflects her belief in finding beauty in everyday moments.
While en route to an appointment, David intended to use her camera but discovered that the batteries were uncharged. Instead, she utilized her phone to seize the moment. “It seemed like an ordinary sunny day in Paris, the city full of busy people,” she recalls. The scene was enhanced by large panels displaying images to shield the ongoing construction, creating a unique backdrop for her photograph.
David was particularly drawn to the interplay of light and shadows, stating, “The light was beautiful, and I wanted to capture the strong shadows of these strangers passing by around the girl with the balloons.” The spontaneity of the capture, coupled with the authentic postures of the pedestrians, contributed to the image’s charm.
Following the initial shot, David edited the photograph using Photoshop Express. She embraces the role of editing in her creative process, emphasizing that it enhances the artistic expression of her work. “Editing is completely a part of the creative process,” she explains.
In this instance, she opted to convert the colour image to black and white, a choice David believes adds depth to her photography. “Monochrome feels to me like a way of trying to find poetry in everyday life,” she notes. This perspective on monochrome photography reflects her artistic philosophy, which seeks to distill the essence of fleeting moments into lasting images.
When creating her photographs, David prioritizes her personal vision over viewer expectations. “I believe my photos reveal a lot about myself,” she states, underscoring the connection between her inner feelings and the external world she captures.
The reception of her work often surprises her, as viewers interpret her images in unexpected ways. “People see things or interpret my photos in ways I don’t expect,” she says. “It reveals their own feelings and visions, and I love it when this happens. Then the image doesn’t belong only to me anymore.”
David’s approach to photography serves as a reminder of the profound connections that can be forged through art, transforming ordinary moments into extraordinary reflections of life.
