Ousmane Dembélé Crowned Ballon d’Or Winner After Remarkable Comeback

Ousmane Dembélé has captured the prestigious Ballon d’Or, marking a significant milestone in his career. The 28-year-old French footballer received this renowned accolade after a season that showcased his extraordinary talent, resilience, and ability to overcome adversity. Dembélé’s victory ends a streak where the award had been dominated by legends such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who had won it consecutively since 2008.
Born on May 15, 1997, in the small French town of Évreux, Dembélé’s passion for football was evident from an early age. In a rare interview, he reminisced, “While others played with toy cars, I always had a ball by my side. Football was not a hobby; it was everything.” He began his career in Évreux before joining the Rennes academy at the age of 13, quickly making a name for himself due to his exceptional speed and technical ability.
Dembélé debuted for Rennes at just 18 years old. His former teammate remarked, “In training, it was as if he was playing FIFA. He performed feats that the rest of us could hardly imagine.” His impressive performance caught the attention of Borussia Dortmund, who signed him for approximately €15 million in 2016. During his first competitive season, Dembélé recorded 21 assists and scored 10 goals, including a standout performance in the German Cup final.
By 2017, Dembélé’s career took another leap when FC Barcelona acquired him for over €100 million, positioning him as a successor to Neymar. Unfortunately, his time at the club was marred by injuries, with Dembélé missing over 100 matches in his first five seasons. Despite glimpses of brilliance, such as a stunning solo goal in the Champions League, consistency eluded him.
Media scrutiny intensified around his lifestyle, with reports suggesting he struggled with punctuality for training sessions due to his passion for video games. Lionel Messi once praised Dembélé, stating, “He is an incredible player. When focused and fit, he can be among the best in the world.”
Dembélé’s fortunes began to change in the 2022/23 season under manager Xavi Hernandez. Barcelona secured the La Liga title, and Dembélé’s performances improved significantly. In summer 2023, he made a pivotal move back to France, signing with Paris Saint-Germain. This decision proved fortuitous, allowing him to showcase his true potential once again.
His resurgence in the 2024/25 season was nothing short of spectacular. Dembélé played 53 matches, contributing 35 goals and 14 assists while helping PSG clinch their first-ever Champions League title and multiple domestic trophies. He was the top scorer in Ligue 1, netting 21 goals in 29 matches, and was named Player of the Season in France.
His contributions in the Champions League were equally impressive, where he scored eight goals and provided six assists, including two assists in the final against Inter Milan. Dembélé also played a key role in reaching the FIFA Club World Cup final.
On the international stage, Dembélé debuted for the French national team in 2016 and celebrated his most significant achievement in 2018 when France won the World Cup in Russia. He returned to the final in 2022 but was substituted in the first half. Nevertheless, France’s coach, Didier Deschamps, continued to believe in his abilities, stating, “Usman possesses something that cannot be trained: instinct, speed, and magic.”
Off the pitch, Dembélé maintains a low profile, rarely engaging with the media. He married in 2021 and is described by those close to him as humble and reserved, preferring to spend time with family and close friends. Nevertheless, his career has not been without controversy. Following his transfer to Barcelona, he faced scrutiny for leaving his apartment in Dortmund in disrepair, resulting in a fine of €20,725 from a German court.
Dembélé also faced challenges during contract negotiations with Barcelona, stating he felt pressured by the club to sign an extension. More recently, he was omitted from a Champions League match against Arsenal due to alleged breaches of club rules. Tensions arose during his transfer to PSG, with disputes reported between Barcelona and his agency over a sum of €10 million.
Despite these controversies, Dembélé’s talent and determination have solidified his status as one of football’s most exciting players. With this latest accolade, he has not only vindicated his potential but has also provided a narrative of resilience and triumph in the face of adversity.
