Niksic Proposes Memorial for Poet Vitomir Vito Nikolic
The Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation (MPNI) in Montenegro has initiated a proposal to the Niksic Municipality for the establishment of a memorial in honor of poet **Vitomir Vito Nikolic**. This initiative aims to commemorate one of Niksic’s most celebrated cultural figures, whose legacy continues to resonate throughout Montenegro.
**Vitomir Vito Nikolic** (1934-1994) is recognized not only for his poetry but also for embodying the spirit of human warmth, freedom of thought, and deep compassion for everyday people. Born and raised in Niksic, his hometown served as a continuous source of inspiration for his work. The MPNI emphasized that Nikolic’s poetry is both simple and profound, tinged with melancholy yet brimming with life, reflecting his love for humanity, nature, and his native land.
His notable works, such as “Drumovanja” and “Sunce, hladno mi je,” have been included in anthologies of Montenegrin and Yugoslav literature. These pieces have significantly contributed to the shared cultural identity of multiple generations. According to the MPNI, **Vitomir Vito Nikolic** remains a symbol of authenticity and dignity, a man who was able to love, forgive, and find beauty in the mundane.
The proposal includes naming a new educational facility within the JPU “Dragan Kovacevic” in the Rudo Polje neighborhood of Niksic after Nikolic. This initiative aims to instill values that he lived and created—goodness, sincerity, creativity, and love for humanity—into the minds of future generations from their earliest days.
By naming the new educational unit after Nikolic, the MPNI believes it sends a powerful message that culture, poetry, and humanity hold a vital place in nurturing and educating the youngest members of society. This approach ensures that **Vitomir Vito Nikolic** will not only serve as a memory of the past but will also become a lasting part of Niksic’s future, a city that shaped him and continues to thrive culturally.
Niksic’s recognition of Nikolic is particularly poignant as the city prepares to be named the **Cultural Capital** in 2030, a title that acknowledges its rich artistic heritage. The MPNI’s initiative aims to ensure that the values and artistic contributions of **Vitomir Vito Nikolic** are celebrated and integrated into the educational framework, thereby enriching the cultural landscape for years to come.
