Montenegro’s boxer, Nikola Ilić, faced an unfortunate setback at the European Championship held in Budva when he had to withdraw from the semi-finals due to a hand injury sustained during the quarter-finals. Ilić had previously eliminated Rosario Simone from Italy, showcasing his potential in the 54 kg category. Despite this injury, he concluded the championship with a well-deserved bronze medal, marking a significant achievement for both him and Montenegrin boxing.

Following a thorough medical examination, the medical team determined that competing in the semi-finals would pose an excessive risk to Ilić’s health. The decision to withdraw, while disappointing, was made with his long-term well-being in mind. According to Nikola Ružić, the head coach of the Montenegrin boxing team, “We accepted the doctors’ decision with great regret, as Ilić has demonstrated outstanding performances, remarkable form, and immense heart to secure his place among the best in Europe in his category.”

The Montenegrin team, along with coaches, expressed pride in Ilić’s accomplishments at the championship, which featured nearly 400 boxers from 32 countries across Europe. They are confident that with proper recovery, he will return to the ring even stronger and ready for future competitions.

As a result of Ilić’s withdrawal, Georgian boxer Davit Alikhanasshvili advances to the finals without contest. Although Ilić could not compete for a chance at the title, his bronze medal serves as a testament to the bright future ahead for Montenegrin boxing.
