Montenegro’s Institutions Face Systematic Decline, Historian Warns
According to historian Milivoj Bešlin, the institutions of Montenegro are experiencing systematic decline, undermining both the material and spiritual foundations of the state. In a recent interview with Televizija E, Bešlin emphasized that this deterioration is not an abstract concept but a tangible reality that will ultimately affect the quality of life for all citizens.
Bešlin highlighted the connection between the current political landscape and the rise of nationalism and clericalism in Montenegro. He noted that the events following August 30, 2020, have been aimed at fundamentally reshaping the nation’s values, politics, and ideology. “The individuals organizing the protests and subsequent movements are trying to create a ‘new Montenegro’ that we will have to adapt to,” he stated.
Concerns Over Historical Revisionism
Bešlin expressed alarm over historical revisionism that threatens to undermine the antifascist consensus that had previously characterized Montenegro. He pointed to the rehabilitation of wartime criminals from World War II, specifically referencing the Chetnik movement, as a significant concern. “The head of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Montenegro, Joanikije, openly acknowledged their role in this historical revisionism,” he remarked. This intentional and systematic effort aims to dismantle Montenegro’s antifascist foundations.
He further criticized the current government for its dependence on the Serbian church and the regime in Belgrade, suggesting that it lacks the courage and willingness to confront these negative trends. “Montenegro is on a path of dual collapse, with weak institutions unable to resist the influences from abroad,” Bešlin stated.
Regarding the influence of Belgrade, Bešlin asserted that key decisions within Montenegro are often made in accordance with directives from the Serbian government under Aleksandar Vučić. He emphasized that even if orders do not arrive directly, local officials loyal to Vučić instinctively align their choices with the desires of the Serbian regime.
Future of Montenegro in the European Union
In discussing Montenegro’s aspirations for European Union membership, Bešlin recognized the strategic decision by the EU to keep Montenegro in the integration process. He noted that Montenegro’s relatively small size and population make it a manageable candidate for membership, which the EU sees as a way to send a positive message to other countries in the region.
Despite this, Bešlin questioned whether Montenegro could achieve EU membership under the current political climate, characterized by historical revisionism and individuals with ties to controversial figures. “It’s hard to imagine that under these conditions, someone like Andrija Mandić could lead Montenegro into the EU,” he concluded.
Bešlin’s reflections serve as a stark reminder of the challenges facing Montenegro as it navigates its political future amidst external influences and internal strife. The implications of these developments could reshape not only the nation’s identity but also its role within the broader European community.
