Montenegro Aims for Victory Against Slovenia in Euro Opener
Montenegro’s national handball team is gearing up for a crucial match against Slovenia, marking the opening of Group D at the EHF Euro 2024 in Oslo today at 18:00. This encounter is particularly significant as it follows Montenegro’s previous victory over Slovenia in 2022, a match that saw them triumph with a narrow score of 33:32, securing their place in the main round of the tournament.
Historically, Montenegro has reached the main round of European championships only twice, first in 2008 and again in 2022. As they prepare for today’s game, the team, led by coach Didije Dinar, recognizes that a win is essential for their progression in the tournament. Dinar emphasized the importance of this match, stating, “Slovenia is a stronger team, having advanced far in previous competitions, but we know what we need to do and will give our maximum effort.”
Slovenia enters the competition with a series of recent victories, having won three consecutive official matches against Montenegro. Despite missing nine key players, including top scorer Aleks Vlah and goalkeeper Klemen Ferlin, Slovenia remains a formidable opponent. Coach Uroš Zorman acknowledged his team’s strengths and expressed confidence in their ability to compete, saying, “Every first match is the most important, and we expect a strong effort from both sides.”
The match holds significant implications for both teams. Branko Vujović, a player from Montenegro, highlighted the importance of remaining focused, stating, “This match isn’t decisive since we have two more games to play; we must concentrate on winning those as well.” His perspective underscores a strategic approach, recognizing that success in the upcoming matches is vital for advancing in the tournament.
Both teams have prepared intensely for this championship. Slovenia played three friendly matches leading up to the Euro, securing wins against Kuwait and Austria but losing to Iceland. Montenegro also had strong performances in their preparations, achieving a victory and a draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
As the tournament progresses, the dynamics between the teams will be closely watched. Montenegro’s strategy will be tested against Slovenia’s established handball techniques, and both sides will be eager to start the tournament with a victory.
The excitement surrounding this match reflects the broader anticipation for the EHF Euro 2024, co-hosted by Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Fans are eager to see how these two competitive teams will shape the course of the tournament, especially given their recent history and the stakes at play.
The tournament schedule includes other key matches today, with Portugal facing Romania and Denmark taking on North Macedonia, along with the Slovenia vs. Montenegro clash, setting the stage for an exhilarating opening day.
