On December 24, 2023, Metropolitan Joanikije officiated a special Christmas Eve liturgy at the Holy Archangel Michael Cathedral in Bar, Montenegro. The service attracted a large congregation, including local officials such as Dušan Raičević, the Mayor of Bar, alongside clergy and numerous worshippers.

Message of Peace and Unity

During his sermon following the liturgy, Metropolitan Joanikije emphasized the significance of the Christmas celebration, stating that the holiday brings blessings and peace to the world. He remarked, “When we celebrate the living and true God with His angels, God’s love, grace, and joy fill our hearts, and peace enters within us.” Joanikije stressed the importance of reconciling with God and fostering love and peace among one another.

The Metropolitan expressed joy at the substantial turnout, particularly noting the presence of children among the attendees. “It is heartwarming to see so many people gathered here, especially the children. The presence of the Mayor and representatives from the local government enhances this occasion,” he stated. He noted the significance of community leaders being present among their people rather than isolated in their offices, highlighting a shift towards a more engaged local governance.

Embracing Christmas Traditions

Metropolitan Joanikije reflected on the deeper meaning of the Christmas holiday, recalling the biblical story of the Magi following the star to Bethlehem and contrasting it with King Herod’s fear and hatred. He urged the congregation to celebrate Christmas in peace, embracing one another, and participating in sacred services and traditional customs, including the lighting of the Yule log.

“We are called to celebrate the Nativity of Christ in peace, to embrace one another, and to gather in holy worship,”

he added, emphasizing that Christmas customs are filled with joy and profound spiritual messages.

To conclude the service, Joanikije invited children from the local religious school to perform a festive program they prepared with their instructor, Slavica Orlandić. “The children will sing the Christmas hymn more beautifully than those of us who are older, as they sing from their hearts with great joy, enriching us all in the process,” he remarked.

The liturgy and celebrations reflect a renewed sense of community and spiritual connection, underlining the importance of unity during this festive season. As the celebrations continue, the message of peace and goodwill resonates widely, ushering in a hopeful spirit for the New Year.
