Local Leader Urges Zeta Residents to Vote Against Wastewater Facility
Residents of the Zeta municipality in Montenegro are being urged to participate in an upcoming referendum to vote against the construction of a wastewater treatment facility. The call to action came from Milan Knežević, the leader of the Democratic People’s Party (DNP), who emphasized the importance of preserving the region’s natural beauty.
In a video message shared on social media, Knežević addressed the local communities, including Botunjani, Srpshtani, Mojanovčani, and others, urging them to stand united against what he described as an unequal battle reminiscent of the biblical David versus Goliath. He stated that voting against the project is essential to safeguard “the most beautiful plain in Montenegro.”
Knežević’s impassioned plea highlighted the collective responsibility of the residents in defending their heritage. He encouraged them to demonstrate their commitment by participating in the referendum, emphasizing that the outcome would reflect their respect for their ancestors and future generations. “We must not be ashamed before our descendants,” he said.
The DNP leader drew an unexpected analogy, likening the potential impact of the referendum to the famous 1986 World Cup in Mexico, where the legendary Diego Maradona showcased his incredible talent. Knežević stated, “Just as everyone signed up for Argentina in 1986, and then the miraculous Maradona appeared, today, the wonderful citizens of Zeta, from all generations, will show that miracles happen and that justice must prevail.”
Knežević’s remarks resonate with the local populace, who are deeply connected to their land and environment. The referendum represents more than just a vote against a wastewater treatment plant; it symbolizes a community’s fight to maintain its identity and protect its natural resources.
As the referendum date approaches, the stakes are high for both the proponents and opponents of the wastewater treatment facility. Local leaders and environmental advocates are mobilizing efforts to ensure that community voices are heard, emphasizing the significance of this decision for the future of Zeta.
The outcome of the referendum could set a precedent for other municipalities facing similar environmental challenges in Montenegro. Knežević’s appeal serves as a reminder of the power of individual and collective action in shaping local governance and environmental policy.
