German Chancellor Urges EU to Embrace Candidate Nations at Munich Conference
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the European Union’s commitment to its candidate nations during the recent Munich Security Conference. Addressing a question from the President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović, Merz stated that the EU does not wish to lose these nations, as they are integral parts of the European continent and potential members of the union.
During a panel discussion, Merz expressed his discomfort with the current EU approach towards aspirant countries. He insisted that the EU must revisit its strategy to better align these nations with the union’s goals. Merz highlighted the urgency of addressing the internal obstacles faced by the EU, referring metaphorically to an “elephant in the room.” This remark alluded to Hungary, which has been blocking various EU agreements, particularly concerning support for Ukraine amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Milatović inquired about the dynamics of EU accession and whether the expansion of the union would enhance Europe’s competitiveness on the global stage. Merz’s comments reflected a broader consensus among EU leaders regarding the importance of integrating candidate countries into the European framework. He noted that the upcoming parliamentary elections in Hungary, scheduled for April 2024, could potentially lead to significant political changes, including the possibility of a shift in leadership away from Viktor Orbán.
The Munich Security Conference is recognized as one of the most influential global forums for shaping security policies and defining future international cooperation. Milatović attended the opening ceremony, underscoring Montenegro’s active role in discussions about regional security and European integration.
Merz’s statements resonate with the ongoing dialogue about the EU’s enlargement strategy, particularly as it faces external pressures and internal differences. His remarks suggest a push for a more unified approach to integrating candidate nations, ensuring that the EU remains competitive and cohesive in a rapidly changing global landscape.
