A former museum curator has been recognised for his significant contributions to Stamford, a town where he has lived for over fifty years. On Monday evening, members of the Stamford Town Council presented John Smith with a Stamford town shield, honouring his dedication to preserving the town’s rich heritage. Smith managed the Stamford Museum for nearly two decades and played a crucial role in establishing a local archive for the Rutland and Stamford Mercury, preserving copies of the newspaper dating back to the 1700s.

During the presentation, the mayor of Stamford, Amanda Wheeler, highlighted the extensive work Smith has accomplished for the town. This includes developing the Stamford Museum throughout the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, ultimately leading to its relocation to its own premises on Broad Street. Additionally, he contributed to the establishment of conservation areas aimed at protecting notable features and architecture within Stamford.

Unfortunately, due to ill health, John was unable to attend the ceremony. His son, Sam Smith, accepted the award on his father’s behalf. In his remarks, Sam expressed a mix of emotions, stating, “I wish, in one sense, I was not here tonight, although if my father had been able to come, I would obviously have joined him, to see him collect this gift.” He acknowledged the impact Stamford has had on his father’s life, saying, “There is no doubt my father has done an enormous amount for Stamford, but Stamford has done an enormous amount for him too.”

Wheeler also reflected on the importance of John’s presence at community events, recalling a recent exhibition of historical posters and playbills held at the town hall. “John came just the other evening to our first exhibition of historical posters and playbills upstairs in the court room of the town hall, and it meant a lot to us to see him there and feel he is behind what we are doing,” she said.

John Smith’s dedication to preserving Stamford’s heritage was previously recognised when he received the British Empire Medal in 2012. His work has left a lasting impact on the community, ensuring that the town’s history continues to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The award presentation serves as a reminder of the vital role individuals like John play in maintaining the cultural identity of their communities.
