Fast-Paced Satire Explores Jewish Identity in “Revenge”
The highly anticipated production, Revenge: After the Levoyah, premiered on November 4, 2023, at the Corn Exchange following a sold-out run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Written by Nick Cassenbaum, this fast-paced satire delves into Jewish identity through a comedic yet chaotic narrative.
In the play, Dylan Corbett-Bader and Gemma Barnett portray Jewish twins Dan and Lauren, who navigate the absurdities of modern-day Britain after returning from their grandfather Lenny’s funeral. The twins find themselves embroiled in a farcical plot to kidnap Jeremy Corbyn, represented humorously by a stool. The narrative satirizes Corbyn’s controversial reputation, particularly accusations of antisemitism, adding layers of complexity to the humor.
The twins’ antics are propelled by Malcolm Spivak, an East End gangster and friend of their late grandfather. As the plot unfolds, the twins’ intentions become increasingly misguided, leading to a series of comedic mishaps. The introduction of a Holocaust memorial event, featuring Moishe, a 94-year-old survivor, further amplifies the absurdity.
The comedy takes sharp turns into the realm of absurdity, with characters such as a flawed plumber and a liberal rabbi grappling with the implications of antisemitism. The play examines the diversity of Jewish experiences in the UK, emphasizing the varied identities within the community.
The production is directed by Emma Jude Harris and features a minimalist set design by Alys Whitehead. The simple staging allows the performances to shine, while the chaotic elements of the story keep the audience engaged.
As the narrative escalates, a botched kidnapping attracts the attention of MI5, the American CIA, and the Israeli Mossad, culminating in a chaotic rescue attempt. A particularly memorable scene involves a high-speed car chase thwarted by a jar of chrein—grated horseradish—thrown at a pursuing vehicle’s windscreen.
Despite its comedic tone, Revenge: After the Levoyah carries a profound message about the complexities of Jewish identity in contemporary society. The blend of humor and critical commentary invites audiences to reflect while being thoroughly entertained. This production promises to leave a lasting impression, showcasing the talent of its cast and crew.
