Esad Merulić, a prominent Montenegrin singer known for his interpretation of traditional sevdah music, emphasizes the genre’s unique qualities amidst evolving musical landscapes. He believes that true sevdah can only be sung with originality and passion, asserting the genre’s cultural significance for Podgorica and Montenegro as a whole.

Preserving Cultural Traditions

Merulić hails from a family deeply rooted in the traditions of Podgorica. He describes the city’s version of sevdah as distinct, characterized by soft vocals and beautiful themes that set it apart from similar styles found in the region. “Podgorica sevdah is specific, with its own arrangements that differ in many aspects from what is perceived as the genre elsewhere,” he stated in an interview with Pobjeda. He draws parallels with other regional styles, such as those from Bosnia and Sandžak, emphasizing that Podgorica’s sevdah is equally valuable.

Despite its cultural importance, Merulić notes that sevdah is not given the attention it deserves. “There is very little support outside of a few annual concerts and the efforts of a small group of dedicated colleagues,” he explained. The changing musical environment has led to a preference for foreign artists over local talent, highlighting a shift that he finds concerning.

Merulić fondly recalls the past when the Center for the Preservation and Development of Minority Cultures in Montenegro (CEKUM) regularly organized performances for local artists. He urges cultural institutions to take the initiative in promoting local music, encouraging them to include these activities in their annual plans.

Challenges and Aspirations in Music

Although recognized as a representative of Podgorica sevdah wherever he goes, Merulić faces challenges in performing in his hometown and country. He shares that most performances are outside of Montenegro, stating, “The irony is that I have the least shows here in my own city and country.” Despite the influx of various music genres supported by modern technology, he believes authenticity remains attainable.

“Vocal uniqueness and interpretation define authenticity, provided one does not lose oneself in new trends,” he remarked. Merulić acknowledges the wealth of talent in the music scene, noting that while many young artists are thriving, some struggle to find local opportunities. He observes that young performers often invest time and resources traveling across the region to establish their names, leading to a situation where “the hardest place to succeed is in your own village.”

For a successful career, Merulić stresses the need for talent, original songs, and financial investment. He highlights the lack of a well-organized music scene, pointing out that reactions tend to be ad hoc rather than systematic. An incident at a recent event illustrated this issue when local musicians were overlooked in favor of foreign acts, prompting protests from the Montenegrin Association of Estrada Artists.

Reflecting on his career, Merulić expresses pride in the recognition he has gained after releasing his first album. He has performed extensively both in Montenegro and the region, with many of his songs accumulating nearly 60 million views. “I feel honored that both young and older audiences appreciate my work,” he added.

Merulić hopes to connect with his audience through a concert in Podgorica this year, expressing gratitude for their unwavering support throughout his career.

Future Endeavors and Personal Reflections

Merulić recently faced personal challenges with a family bereavement, which temporarily halted his plans. Nonetheless, he remains committed to creating and performing for his hometown. “I intend to sing for Podgorica for as long as I live. I sometimes regret not being able to contribute more to its cultural scene,” he stated.

He also expressed a desire to be seen as a Podgorican beyond his role as an artist. “In addition to my love for music, fate often plays a role. Sometimes it works in your favor, and sometimes it does not,” he reflected. No matter the circumstances, he insists that he will continue to perform, as music is an integral part of his being.

Merulić acknowledges the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the music industry, recognizing its potential for idea development and arrangement. However, he firmly believes that nothing can replace the human voice, soul, and emotion intrinsic to music. “AI can be useful, but it cannot create authentic sevdah. At least I have yet to hear it,” he concluded.

As Merulić navigates his musical journey, his passion for sevdah and commitment to his roots continue to resonate, ensuring that this cherished cultural expression remains alive in Montenegro.
