Cultural Heritage Status Granted to Sveta Trojica Monastery

The Administration for the Protection of Cultural Heritage has officially confirmed the status of the Manastir Sveta Trojica in Pljevlja as a cultural property of national significance. This decision follows a re-evaluation process conducted by the Administration, which assessed the monastery’s characteristics and cultural value.

According to the Administration, the monastery, also known as the Vrhbreznički Monastery, was established in 1537 with the construction of a church by the founder, Hieromonk Visarion. Approximately fifty years later, in 1592, Monk Georgije Poblaćanin added a narthex to the structure. The church’s current appearance dates back to 1876, when significant renovations were completed. The majority of the monastery complex is situated on a plateau, enclosed by a stone retaining wall with gates.

The re-evaluation team identified that moisture from subterranean water poses a threat to the monastery’s vibrant frescoes, which are currently in poor condition. The Administration emphasized the urgency of implementing protective measures to preserve this important cultural site.

The Manastir Sveta Trojica is notable for its impressive architecture. The frescoes within are the work of renowned painter Pop Strahinja from Budimlja, recognized as the first indigenous artist in the region. Prior to his contributions, much of the artwork was produced by Greek workshops, which lacked the same artistic quality.

As the monastery gains recognition for its cultural significance, efforts to safeguard its heritage will be vital for future generations. The Administration’s commitment to preservation reflects a broader dedication to maintaining the cultural legacy of the region.
