Cetinje Honors Dr. Mihail Vukmirović and Montenegrin Language Faculty
The city of Cetinje recently celebrated the achievements of Dr. Mihail Vukmirović and the Faculty of Montenegrin Language and Literature during a formal event held at the Government House. The Ivan Crnojević Charter, awarded for significant lifetime contributions, was presented to the Faculty for the year 2025. This institution plays a pivotal role in preserving the Montenegrin language, culture, and identity.
During the ceremony, Dr. Vukmirović received the 2024 Charter, an accolade he was unable to accept the previous year due to the cancellation of the event following a tragic incident in Cetinje. The mayor of Cetinje, Nikola Đurašković, emphasized the historical significance of the city, its role in safeguarding Montenegrin sovereignty, and the values on which modern Montenegro stands.
Recognition of Contributions
In his speech, Đurašković highlighted the importance of Cetinje as a symbol of national resilience and identity, noting, “This year marks 20 years since the restoration of Montenegro’s independence, a testament to our people’s enduring quest for freedom and statehood.” He underscored that the restoration in 2006 reflected the determination seen in the efforts of historical figures, such as Ivan Crnojević.
The mayor praised Dr. Vukmirović, stating that his life and work exemplify the highest ideals of the medical profession. “His expertise has been recognized beyond the borders of Montenegro, particularly through advanced training in renowned European medical centers. He has pioneered significant advancements in cardiology, including being the first in the region to successfully implant the world’s smallest pacemaker,” Đurašković remarked.
Dr. Vukmirović expressed profound gratitude for the honor, stating that it represents both a privilege and a responsibility. He acknowledged his deep connection to Cetinje, the city that has significantly influenced his life and career. “This recognition elevates my expectations. It is not just a personal honor but a commitment to continue the path of compassion and excellence,” he said.
Faculty’s Enduring Legacy
The Faculty of Montenegrin Language and Literature, which received the Charter for 2025, was represented by Professor Boban Batričević. He conveyed appreciation to all who have supported the institution since its inception. Batričević remarked, “I am pleased that the city of Cetinje, through this Charter named after its founder, acknowledges the efforts the Faculty invests during these challenging times for our country and nation.”
He further articulated the faculty’s resilience amid societal and political upheaval. “Our professors and researchers are committed to upholding the foundational values of Montenegrin statehood, advocating for freedom of thought, scientific principles, and, above all, responsibility to our homeland,” Batričević stated.
In closing, Đurašković reiterated the significance of awarding the Charter, noting it recognizes an institution that actively embodies the principles upon which Montenegro is built: free thought, cultural awareness, and perseverance in preserving the pillars of national identity. This event not only celebrates individual achievements but also reinforces the collective commitment to Montenegro’s heritage and future.
