A significant setback for Buducnost Voli occurred following their defeat against Besiktas in Istanbul, where they lost 96-74. This loss not only jeopardizes their ambitions in the Eurocup but also places them in a precarious position as they head into the final three matches of the group stage. With a record of nine wins and six losses, Buducnost now trails the leading duo, Besiktas and Burg, both of whom have eleven wins and four losses. The implications of this defeat are profound, as Buducnost has effectively been relegated from contention for one of the top two spots in Group B, which would grant them a direct berth into the quarter-finals and the advantage of home-court play.

The loss was compounded by unexpected defeats to Trento and Panionios earlier in the season. Competing alongside Besiktas and Burg, Turk Telekom also remains a contender with a record of ten wins and five losses. Following their latest defeat, Buducnost fell from third to fifth place in the group standings, now tied with Trento at a 9-6 record. Trento’s recent victory against Lietkabelis, secured by a last-second three-pointer from D.J. Stewart, has further complicated Buducnost’s path to the knockout stage.

Going forward, Buducnost must secure victories in their remaining matches to maintain playoff hopes. They will face Kemnic at home on Tuesday, followed by an away game against Ulm, and conclude the group stage with a home match against Burg. Coach Andrej Zakelj emphasized the need for his team to focus on their performance rather than external results, stating, “We must focus on our game. We will fight until the end, and we will see what that brings us.”

The manner of their defeat against Besiktas, particularly away from home, was concerning. The Turkish side is a strong contender for the Eurocup title, bolstered by the recent addition of experienced Euroleague players, including guard Metta World Peace and center Sertac Sanli. Buducnost’s performance in Istanbul, especially after a promising start, raised alarms. They initially led 6-5 but quickly fell behind after a 20-0 run by Besiktas, who controlled the game thereafter.

Buducnost attempted to claw back into the contest, narrowing the gap to eleven points just before halftime. However, Besiktas responded with a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 21 points early in the second half, effectively sealing the game. By the final quarter, Buducnost faced a maximum deficit of 28 points, with the scoreboard reading 96-68 at the end.

Zakelj noted the team’s struggles against Besiktas’ physicality, stating, “We started well, but we failed to adapt to their aggressiveness.” The defensive lapses were particularly damaging, allowing Besiktas to secure 16 offensive rebounds, a statistic that illustrates their dominance on the boards.

Despite standout performances from point guard Jogi Ferrell (18 points) and Oleksandr Kovliar (13 points), the overall offensive output from Buducnost was lacking. Key players such as Rashid Sulejman and Skylar Mays underperformed, contributing only six points each. Additionally, the absence of injured player Fletcher Magee further weakened their lineup.

Defensively, Buducnost has struggled throughout the season, allowing 90 or more points for the sixth time in regular-season play. This was evident in their inability to contain Besiktas, which led to a significant disparity in rebounding and shooting percentages. Buducnost finished with a 42.9% field goal percentage compared to Besiktas’ 52.5%.

The upcoming matches are critical for Buducnost as they seek to avoid further setbacks. Historical data from the Eurocup indicates the importance of home-court advantage in the knockout stages. Since the current competition format was established in the 2021-22 season, Buducnost has not advanced past the first round, suffering defeats in away knockout games in previous seasons.

With their current record of nine wins and six losses, Buducnost has matched their performance from previous seasons after 15 games. However, they must improve to secure a playoff spot. The final matches will determine their fate, and the team is aware of the stakes involved. The players and coaching staff are focused on reclaiming their competitive edge to finish the group stage strongly.
