Beloved Therapy Dog Bella Finalist for BBC Community Award
The impact of a therapy dog on young lives has gained recognition as Bella, a six-year-old Border Collie cross, has been named a finalist in the BBC’s Make a Difference Awards for Bristol. Based at Jamie’s Farm near Bath, Bella has supported over 3,000 teenagers since 2019, providing comfort and companionship to those facing behavioral, attendance, or mental health challenges.
Founded in 2009 by Tish and Jamie Feilden, Jamie’s Farm operates two farms in the Box Valley—Hill House and the newly opened Lower Shockerwick Farm. The charity offers five-day residential stays where young people can engage in therapeutic activities. Bella plays an essential role in these programs, acting as a constant companion for visitors.
Bella’s Therapeutic Presence Makes a Difference
Her presence is more than just comforting; it fosters an environment where young individuals can express themselves. During ‘walk-and-talk’ sessions led by Julie Tonks, the farm’s therapeutic lead and Bella’s owner, many young people find it easier to open up. Tonks stated, “We’re overjoyed that Bella’s enormous contribution in helping young people to build their confidence and self-esteem has been recognised by the BBC Make a Difference Awards.”
Bella exhibits keen instincts, recognizing when someone is struggling. “She can meet them where their energy is, putting them at ease,” added Tonks. “I can’t think of a single young person that hasn’t left here feeling a connection with her.” Her gentle approach—often sitting beside visitors with a paw on their leg or resting her head in their lap—has left a significant mark on those she interacts with.
The farm recently expanded, with Bella relocating from Hill House to Lower Shockerwick Farm, which was officially opened in July 2023 by its patron, Her Majesty The Queen. The new facility is anticipated to welcome up to 500 young people and their teachers annually.
Personal Stories Highlight Bella’s Impact
Among those who have experienced Bella’s positive influence is Amani, a teenager from London who visited the farm in 2022. Amani shared, “The second Bella came up to me I came out of my shell.” During her stay, Bella became a source of strength, helping Amani discover a confidence she had previously lacked.
As the BBC’s Make a Difference Awards approaches, winners will be announced at the Harbour Hotel in Bristol on September 26. Regardless of the outcome, Bella has already made a profound impact on the lives of countless young individuals, solidifying her status as a beloved figure at Jamie’s Farm and beyond.
