At least 100 people have died following a military operation by the United States aimed at removing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from power. The Venezuelan Interior Minister, Diosdado Cabello, confirmed the casualties during a press briefing, although the official count had not been released by the government in Caracas. The Venezuelan military had previously published a list detailing 23 fatalities within their ranks.

Officials in Venezuela have accused US forces of executing a premeditated attack that resulted in the deaths of many members of Maduro’s security contingent. In a related statement, Cuban authorities claimed that at least 32 members of their military and intelligence services stationed in Venezuela were also killed during the operation.

The operation took place on January 3, 2024, when US forces captured President Maduro in the capital city of Caracas. Following his arrest, Maduro was transported to the United States, where he faces serious charges related to drug trafficking and arms dealing.

In the aftermath of the attack, Silia Flores, Maduro’s wife, sustained a head injury during the operation, while Maduro himself reportedly suffered a leg injury, according to Cabello.

In response to the violence, interim President Delsi Rodríguez declared a week of mourning for the military personnel who lost their lives during the assault. During a televised address, Cabello praised Rodríguez for her bravery amidst the turmoil, highlighting the government’s resolve in the face of such challenges.

The situation in Venezuela remains fluid as international reactions to the US military operation continue to unfold. Further developments are expected as both Venezuelan and US authorities provide additional information regarding the circumstances surrounding the attack and its aftermath.
