Afanu Latiću Wins Prestigious Zaim Azemović Award for Literature

The esteemed Zaim Azemović Award for 2023 has been awarded to Afanu Latiću for his collection of stories titled “Pod oštrim uglom.” The award is presented annually by the Centre for Culture in Rožaje, recognizing outstanding contributions to literature. This year’s accolade highlights Latiću’s unique storytelling ability and his capacity to blend past, present, and future narratives.

Critically acclaimed Bosnian-Herzegovinian writer and critic, Dr. Melida Travančić, praised Latiću’s work, stating that the collection “connects the past and the present, hints at the future, and shapes a new world.” She emphasized that storytelling serves as a means to perceive reality differently, encouraging readers to explore and reflect on their surroundings through a new lens.

Afanu Latiću was born in Berane in 1983. He completed his primary education at “Hajro Šahmanović” in Plav before enrolling in the “Gazi Husrev-beg Medresa” in Sarajevo. Following his secondary education, he pursued a degree in Oriental Philology, focusing on Arabic and Turkish languages and literature. Upon completing his studies, Latiću returned to Montenegro, where he has been teaching Arabic at the “Mehmed Fatih” Medresa in Podgorica.

In addition to his teaching role, Latiću is actively involved in translating from Arabic, as well as writing both poetry and prose. His literary contributions reflect a deep engagement with cultural narratives and a commitment to enriching the literary landscape in the region.

The Zaim Azemović Award is named after a prominent figure in literary culture and serves to honor writers who make significant impacts through their work. Latiću’s recognition this year not only celebrates his individual accomplishments but also highlights the importance of storytelling in understanding and shaping societal narratives.
