Recognizing Early Signs of Ovarian Cancer: Expert Insights
Ovarian cancer claims the life of one woman every two hours in the UK, highlighting the urgency of early detection. The Robin Cancer Trust, a charity dedicated to testicular, ovarian, and germ cell cancers, is emphasizing the importance of recognizing subtle symptoms that could indicate this serious illness. If diagnosed early, ovarian cancer has a cure rate of approximately 90 percent.
According to the charity, there are over 7,000 new cases of ovarian cancer reported annually in the UK, leading to nearly 4,000 deaths each year. The challenge lies in the fact that symptoms are often mistaken for other conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, stress, or menopause-related issues. As a result, only 20 percent of patients receive an early diagnosis when treatment is most effective.
Understanding the Symptoms
The Robin Cancer Trust stresses the need for women to be “symptom-aware.” Some common early symptoms of ovarian cancer include:
1. **Bloating:** Persistent bloating that does not subside is a significant warning sign. This type of bloating differs from typical digestive discomfort; it may cause tightness in clothing or a noticeably swollen abdomen. This symptom often results from a condition known as ascites, where fluid accumulates in the abdominal cavity due to the cancer.
2. **Frequent Urination:** An increased urge to urinate, both during the day and night, can occur when ovarian tumors press against the bladder. This pressure reduces the bladder’s capacity, leading to more frequent bathroom visits.
3. **Feeling Full:** Women may experience a sensation of fullness shortly after beginning a meal. This happens as tumors grow large enough to exert pressure on the stomach, affecting its capacity. This symptom may also be accompanied by nausea or indigestion.
4. **Irregular Bleeding:** Unusual vaginal bleeding, including spotting between periods or heavier menstrual cycles, is a concerning symptom. Women who experience any bleeding post-menopause should seek medical evaluation.
5. **Lower Abdominal Pain:** Ongoing discomfort in the lower abdomen or pelvic area that does not resolve is not typical. This pain may manifest as a dull ache or sharp sensation and can result from tumor growth, ascites, or metastasis.
Additional symptoms may include indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, back pain, persistent fatigue, or unexplained weight loss.
When to Seek Medical Advice
The Robin Cancer Trust advises that while these symptoms can be common and caused by various factors, women should consult their general practitioner (GP) if symptoms are persistent, new, or unusual for them. Toby Freeman, CEO and founder of the Robin Cancer Trust, emphasizes the importance of self-awareness:
“Remember, no one knows your body better than you do. Listen to your body, stay symptom aware, and seek medical advice if something doesn’t feel right. Knowing what’s normal for your body and speaking up when something changes can save lives.”
Ovarian cancer risk factors include genetic predispositions, with both the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes linked to increased risks of ovarian and breast cancer. Additionally, women with endometriosis—a condition characterized by uterine tissue growing outside the womb—face a fourfold increased risk. Being overweight and having a history of cancer in other parts of the body can also elevate risk.
Despite the challenges associated with diagnosis, raising awareness about these symptoms is crucial. The Robin Cancer Trust continues to advocate for greater understanding and education around ovarian cancer, urging women to be vigilant about their health.
