New ‘Stratus’ Covid Variant Surges Across UK: Key Insights

A new Covid variant identified as the XFG strain, referred to as **Stratus**, is rapidly spreading across England. The latest data from the **UK Health Security Agency** indicates that Stratus is becoming increasingly prevalent, with the **World Health Organisation (WHO)** highlighting its “rapidly growing” presence worldwide. Experts warn that this variant could soon become the dominant strain.

Dr **Michael Head**, a senior research fellow at the **University of Southampton**, cautions that while Stratus may mirror other recent variants in terms of illness severity, it presents an “unpleasant bug.” He stated, “This emerging Covid variant looks to be similar to other recent strains in terms of severity of illness, and it’s likely the existing vaccines will continue to be effective against Stratus.” Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of remaining updated on vaccinations, especially for those eligible for additional doses.

According to **GISAID**, a global initiative monitoring various Covid strains, infections of Stratus have surged dramatically. Their findings reveal that **22.7 percent** of all specimens analyzed tested positive for this variant, representing a **7.4 percent** increase from the previous week.
