Learning Disability Packs Enhance A&E Experience in Wales

Hywel Dda University Health Board has officially launched Learning Disability Packs across emergency departments in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, and Pembrokeshire. This initiative follows a successful pilot program at the emergency department of Glangwili Hospital. The packs aim to alleviate stress and improve accessibility for adults with learning disabilities during emergency hospital visits.

These Learning Disability Packs are specifically designed by the health board’s Learning Disabilities Team. They offer clear and simple information, providing reassurance for patients and their families during what can be a challenging experience. The packs are now available at several key locations, including Bronglais Hospital, Glangwili Hospital, and Withybush Hospital’s emergency departments, as well as at the Acute Medical Assessment Unit of Prince Philip Hospital.

To ensure that these packs are distributed efficiently, the Learning Disabilities Team is actively collaborating with front-of-house staff. They are conducting drop-in sessions to educate staff about the packs and their importance. Furthermore, promotional posters will be displayed throughout the departments to raise awareness about the availability of these resources. Patients or their carers can also request a pack directly at the reception, ensuring easy access to vital information.

The introduction of these packs represents a significant step towards inclusivity in healthcare services. By providing tailored resources for individuals with learning disabilities, Hywel Dda University Health Board is enhancing the overall patient experience in emergency situations.
