Glasgow Hospitals Reinstate Face Mask Mandate Amid Flu Surge
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has reinstated a face mask requirement for all visitors and staff in its hospitals to combat the rising spread of flu. This directive, which emphasizes the use of a Fluid Resistant Surgical Mask, aligns with recommendations from the organization’s Infection Prevention and Control Teams and is consistent with measures adopted by other Health Boards across Scotland.
The new guidance urges individuals to wear masks at all times while on hospital premises. This precaution aims to protect vulnerable patients and minimize the transmission of the flu virus. In a recent statement, Professor Angela Wallace, Executive Director of Nursing at NHSGGC, highlighted the importance of these measures. She stated, “Flu season is here, and we want to ensure that you, your loved ones, and those who are the most vulnerable stay protected.”
Alternative Care Options for Flu Symptoms
In addition to the mask mandate, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has advised individuals exhibiting mild to moderate flu symptoms to avoid attending Accident & Emergency (A&E) departments. Instead, patients are encouraged to seek guidance through NHS Inform, consult with their local general practitioner, or visit community pharmacies without an appointment.
For those experiencing urgent symptoms, NHS 24 can be contacted at 111, where emergency appointments may be arranged if necessary. This approach aims to alleviate pressure on hospital resources while ensuring patients receive appropriate care.
The health organization continues to stress that vaccination remains the most effective measure against flu. Eligible individuals will receive invitations for vaccination, and those who missed their appointments can check with local pharmacies regarding availability. Additionally, mobile vaccination clinics are operational across NHSGGC, allowing eligible patients to receive their vaccines without prior appointments.
As the flu season progresses, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde encourages the public to adhere to safety measures, including mask-wearing and vaccination, to safeguard health and well-being in the community. By following these guidelines, individuals can contribute to the effort to reduce the spread of the flu virus in hospital settings and beyond.
