Ben West, a 38-year-old father from Port St Joe, Florida, is fighting for his life after a flesh-eating infection severely affected his leg. The infection, caused by the bacteria Vibrio vulnificus, began after he went crabbing and fishing with his children in coastal waters on August 23, 2023. Just three days later, he experienced confusion and disorientation, prompting his fiancée, Janie Knowles, to rush him to Ascension Sacred Heart Bay hospital.

Upon diagnosis, the situation escalated rapidly. Large blisters formed on Ben’s leg, which soon began to swell dramatically. Janie described the blisters as “busting” and the pain as the “most excruciating” he had ever felt. Janie recounted the harrowing experience, saying, “I was scared, scared of death.” As the infection progressed, Ben suffered from kidney and liver failure, requiring multiple surgeries to combat the infection. “Everything was happening so fast,” she said. Despite undergoing at least four operations, doctors anticipate that further procedures will be necessary.
