Father Fights for Life After Flesh-Eating Infection from Crabbing
Ben West, a 38-year-old father from Port St Joe, Florida, is fighting for his life after a flesh-eating infection severely affected his leg. The infection, caused by the bacteria Vibrio vulnificus, began after he went crabbing and fishing with his children in coastal waters on August 23, 2023. Just three days later, he experienced confusion and disorientation, prompting his fiancée, Janie Knowles, to rush him to Ascension Sacred Heart Bay hospital.
Upon diagnosis, the situation escalated rapidly. Large blisters formed on Ben’s leg, which soon began to swell dramatically. Janie described the blisters as “busting” and the pain as the “most excruciating” he had ever felt. The speed at which the infection progresses is alarming; according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the bacteria can be lethal within days.
Janie recounted the harrowing experience, saying, “I was scared, scared of death.” As the infection progressed, Ben suffered from kidney and liver failure, requiring multiple surgeries to combat the infection. “Everything was happening so fast,” she said. Despite undergoing at least four operations, doctors anticipate that further procedures will be necessary.
Rapid Response Needed for Vibrio Infections
The infection is particularly dangerous because Vibrio vulnificus thrives in warm seawater, especially in coastal areas like Florida. The CDC notes that most cases occur between May and October, primarily affecting individuals who engage in activities in brackish waters or consume raw shellfish.
Ben’s case highlights the urgent need for awareness regarding the risks associated with water activities. His father, Keith West, emphasized the severity of the infection, warning others to weigh the potential dangers. “This disease, if you’re wrong, it will kill you,” he stated.
Ben’s family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover medical expenses, as they anticipate a long road to recovery. The campaign notes that Ben was previously healthy and had no significant medical issues prior to this incident. Janie remarked on the long-term implications of the infection, stating, “Now we have to start dealing with the residual effects to his skin,” which may include skin grafts due to tissue damage.
Understanding the Risks of Vibrio vulnificus
Vibrio bacteria, particularly Vibrio vulnificus, are known for causing serious infections that can result in necrotizing fasciitis, a rare but life-threatening condition. Symptoms can develop rapidly from minor wounds exposed to contaminated water. Early signs include blistering skin, fever, and low blood pressure. The CDC advises that immediate medical attention is crucial for anyone exhibiting these symptoms after potential exposure.
The community is urged to exercise caution when swimming or engaging in water-related activities, particularly in areas where this bacteria is prevalent. Ben’s struggle serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers lurking in seemingly benign environments, and his family’s journey underscores the importance of awareness and swift medical intervention in cases of infection.
