A couple from North Lincolnshire, Philip Hicks and Paula Kirk, will showcase their quest for a holiday home in Spain on the Channel 4 programme, A Place In The Sun. The episode is set to air at 18:00 on October 22, 2023. Their journey reflects a long-held aspiration to own a property abroad, particularly in the Barcelona region.

Philip and Paula, residents of Keadby, expressed excitement about sharing their experience with viewers, although they have chosen to remain tight-lipped about the outcome of their search. Philip described the process as “brilliant” and reflected, “I wish we’d done it years ago.” Their segment was filmed in 2023, and the couple was careful not to reveal any spoilers regarding their final decision.

The couple’s enthusiasm for Barcelona is well-documented, with Philip stating they have visited the city four to five times a year for the past 30 years. He is also a member of FC Barcelona, further highlighting his connection to the area. Encouraged by family to apply for the show, Philip took the initiative to research the application process, which he described as extensive, involving “about 30 pages to download.”

Following a successful screen test in London, the production team visited Keadby to film segments with the couple. Philip recalled the timeline, noting that they were informed it could take up to two years for their episode to air. The couple was paired with presenter Laura Hamilton, who Philip praised as “genuine and nice,” making their week of filming enjoyable.

The filming process was detailed, with Philip mentioning that they had to adhere to strict guidelines regarding wardrobe continuity. “You have to try to look the same throughout,” he explained, emphasizing the need to wear identical clothing for four days. The filming schedule was rigorous, starting at 09:00 each day after an 08:00 breakfast.

During the filming, the couple experienced moments of unpredictability, with some properties not meeting their specific criteria. Philip indicated that their episode would include an element of suspense, adding to the viewing experience.

Reflecting on their journey, Philip encouraged others to consider participating in the show, saying, “I’d recommend this to anybody. I wish we’d done it years before.”

As the air date approaches, anticipation builds among Philip and Paula’s friends and family, with Philip noting that even his dentist was curious about when it would air. The couple’s journey is not just a search for a holiday home; it is a testament to their dreams and the connections they have formed over years of visiting Spain.
