Montenegro Honors Late Archbishop Amfilohije with Posthumous Award
Montenegro’s President, Jakov Milatović, awarded the posthumous Order of the Montenegrin Great Star to the late Archbishop Amfilohije on December 1, 2023. This honor, the highest state recognition in Montenegro, acknowledges Amfilohije’s significant contributions to enhancing the country’s international reputation and preserving its spiritual traditions.
In a statement from the Office of Public Relations of the President of Montenegro, Milatović emphasized the lasting impact of Amfilohije’s work on the nation’s history and societal peace. He noted that the late archbishop’s voice, strength, and wisdom continue to resonate within Montenegro. “Today, we remember a man whose legacy remains indelibly etched in our country’s history,” Milatović remarked.
Born in Moraca and educated in prestigious institutions across Europe, Amfilohije played a pivotal role beyond his ecclesiastical duties. Milatović described him as a bridge between spirituality and knowledge, embodying a connection between East and West. Amfilohije’s educational background and authority enabled him to foster dialogue with representatives of various faiths, thereby enhancing Montenegro’s international standing.
The president reflected on his experiences with global religious leaders, highlighting the respect and admiration they held for Amfilohije. Milatović stated, “His voice was strong and steadfast, much like the Montenegrin cross he cherished.” He further noted that during tumultuous periods in Montenegrin history, Amfilohije’s calls for peace and dignity provided a rational voice that helped maintain the nation’s integrity.
Milatović pointed out Amfilohije’s instrumental role during the 2006 referendum for Montenegro’s independence, emphasizing that his leadership contributed to social stability. “His public appearances and calls for brotherhood and understanding helped Montenegro navigate this critical process without internal conflict,” the president added.
During the ceremony, the award was presented to the current Archbishop Joanikije, who expressed gratitude for the recognition of Amfilohije’s extensive contributions. Joanikije remarked on Amfilohije’s esteemed presence in Orthodox communities worldwide, underscoring the significance of the Order of the Montenegrin Great Star as a tribute to the former archbishop’s efforts.
Milatović noted that Amfilohije’s legacy includes the revival of church heritage and the reintroduction of spirituality into public life. His leadership saw the restoration of numerous churches and monasteries, as well as the establishment of significant cathedrals in cities like Podgorica and Bar. Under Amfilohije, Montenegro became a welcoming destination for high-ranking representatives of the Orthodox Church, marking a notable period in its ecclesiastical history.
The president emphasized Amfilohije’s commitment to fostering interfaith dialogue, stating that his relationships with leaders from the Catholic Church, Islamic community, and Jewish community were vital in promoting tolerance and mutual respect. This approach helped solidify the foundation of Montenegrin society, especially during the last years of his life when he became a symbol of spiritual resistance.
During the peaceful protests in 2019 and 2020, Amfilohije played a crucial role in guiding the public towards a dignified and non-violent expression of their demands. Milatović highlighted that these gatherings became significant for the democratic changes that followed in Montenegro, demonstrating the power of peaceful assembly.
In his concluding remarks, Milatović reiterated that Amfilohije’s message of unity, faith, and reason continues to resonate in Montenegro. “We defend our country with truth, faith, and understanding, and we strive for change through dialogue, not conflict,” he stated before quoting the renowned Montenegrin poet Njegoš, emphasizing the timeless nature of Amfilohije’s legacy.
The ceremony was attended by family members, including Amfilohije’s brother, Pavić Radović, who represented the family in honoring the late archbishop’s memory. As Montenegro reflects on Amfilohije’s life and contributions, the posthumous award serves as a reminder of his enduring impact on both the spiritual and social fabric of the nation.
