Japan Appoints Yontama, Calico Cat, as New Stationmaster
A calico cat named Yontama has been officially appointed as the new stationmaster at Kishi Station in Japan, marking a continuation of a unique tradition that has captivated visitors for nearly two decades. The ceremony took place on January 7, 2026, highlighting the charm of having feline stationmasters, a practice that has contributed to tourism and revitalization of the railway.
Located on the Wakayama Electric Railway’s Kishigawa Line, Kishi Station has gained a reputation for its unconventional leadership. During the inauguration, Yontama received a letter of appointment and a medallion engraved with her title, presented by President Kojima of the railway. Yontama is the third cat to hold this prestigious position, following in the paw prints of Tama, who started the tradition in 2007, and Nitama, who succeeded her until her passing in November 2025.
This delightful tradition began with Tama, whose popularity transformed Kishi Station into a tourist attraction. After Tama’s death in 2012, she was succeeded by Nitama, who continued to draw visitors until her death in late 2025. The absence of a stationmaster left a void that Yontama has now filled, bringing renewed interest to the station.
Yontama is not new to the role; prior to her appointment at Kishi Station, she served as the stationmaster at Idakiso Station, giving her valuable experience in railway duties. The recent ceremony also introduced Rokutama, Yontama’s apprentice, who is being groomed for future responsibilities. According to President Kojima, Rokutama is still in training, akin to “a student being sent into service before completing their studies.”
As Yontama settles into her new role, the whimsical nature of having a cat as a stationmaster continues to inspire joy among locals and tourists alike. The presence of these feline leaders has not only boosted the station’s appeal but has also played a significant role in the revitalization of the once-struggling railway line.
The tradition of cat stationmasters at Kishi Station serves as a reminder of the unique ways communities can engage with their heritage and attract visitors. As the railway embraces its furry representatives, many are eager to see how Yontama and her apprentice will shape the future of Kishi Station.
