Fans Launch Campaign to Honor Ace Frehley as Astronaut
A campaign has been initiated to posthumously award the late Ace Frehley, the iconic guitarist of the legendary rock band Kiss, honorary astronaut status. Fans and supporters are encouraged to sign a petition advocating for this recognition, which aims to celebrate Frehley’s impact on music and culture.
The campaign was launched by Katherine Sugg, who reflected on Frehley’s legacy following his death on October 16, 2025, at the age of 74. “The world lost not just a legend, not just a rock icon, but also a good man,” Sugg stated. She emphasized Frehley’s journey with Kiss, noting that he took “one small orange step and one small red step” to create the global phenomenon known today.
Sugg highlighted that while Frehley fulfilled many dreams during his life, one aspiration remained unaccomplished: becoming an astronaut. “When he suddenly passed away from a brain bleed following a head injury, he was still merely playing the character of a Space Cadet. He never got to be one for real,” she noted. The petition calls for NASA to grant Frehley the title of honorary astronaut with the rank of “Captain,” as a fitting tribute to his celestial persona.
Frehley, known for his Spaceman (or Space Ace) character, first introduced the concept when Kiss launched in 1973. His thematic influence continued long after his departure from the band, as evidenced by his post-Kiss project, Frehley’s Comet. He also released solo albums such as 2014’s Space Invader and 2018’s Spaceman, which reflect his enduring fascination with space.
His discography includes songs evocative of his cosmic persona, such as “Mission To Mars,” “Quantum Flux,” “Inside The Vortex,” and “Walkin’ On The Moon.” Each track contributes to the image of a musician deeply connected to themes of exploration and the universe.
As of now, NASA has not publicly responded to the petition. The campaign continues to gain traction among fans who wish to see Frehley honored in a manner that reflects his extraordinary contributions to music and culture. Sugg concluded her remarks by stating, “His last countdown should be his absolute best!”
The movement not only aims to celebrate Frehley’s artistic legacy but also acknowledges the impact he had on countless fans and fellow musicians alike. The petition serves as a testament to the lasting influence of Ace Frehley, a figure who transcended the boundaries of rock music to become a symbol of creativity and inspiration.
