Coheed And Cambria Rise Again with New Album and Lineup Change
An armed robbery, lineup changes, and a new album have marked a significant comeback for the American progressive rock band Coheed And Cambria. Following a turbulent period, the group is set to release their latest album, The Afterman: Ascension, the first part of a double album that reflects their evolution in sound and personal experiences.
The band, known for their intricate storytelling and musical experimentation, faced considerable challenges since the release of their sixth album in 2012. They navigated the replacement of bassist Mic Todd, who was arrested for armed robbery related to his struggles with addiction, and welcomed back original drummer Josh Eppard. The new lineup has reinvigorated the band as they prepare to explore new creative territories.
Claudio Sanchez, the band’s frontman, explained the decision to produce a double album: “When I started writing the music, there was no full idea. Life inspired the music, and I realised it could be a double album.” Sanchez expressed his apprehension about the form, noting that double albums can often prioritize quantity over quality. He aimed instead for a cohesive experience akin to Pink Floyd‘s The Wall.
The narrative of The Afterman continues the saga of The Amory Wars, Sanchez’s science-fiction tetralogy set in a universe of interconnected planets. “I’ve always loved the medium of comic books,” he remarked. “I wanted to leave listeners wanting more, as opposed to overwhelming them.” This approach aligns with the band’s inspiration from 1970s rock, reminiscent of albums like Tommy by The Who and Fragile by Yes.
The lead-up to the album’s release included a visually striking trailer that combined electronic sounds with film noir aesthetics, showcasing their artistic evolution. Sanchez noted the influence of a Mastodon concert experience, which led them to adapt their original science-fiction concept into a vintage film noir style.
The band members believe their audience seeks a deeper connection beyond the music. Sanchez stated, “That’s why we create complete packages with the music first, then add the background storylines.” The tracks often reflect his life experiences, woven into the fabric of the fictional narratives.
Life’s challenges have shaped the band’s narrative, particularly Todd’s struggles with addiction, which the band had hoped to support him through. Sanchez reflected on the painful reality of Todd’s situation during their tours, expressing regret that they could not help him overcome his difficulties. “I wish things had panned out differently,” he said.
With Eppard’s return and the addition of bassist Zach Cooper, the band has embraced a renewed sense of purpose. “Zach is an amazing player,” Sanchez said, highlighting Cooper’s skill and the positive energy he brings to the group. Eppard echoed this sentiment, stating, “This has been like going home,” and expressed excitement about this new chapter in the band’s history.
Looking forward, Coheed And Cambria are not only focused on their musical journey but also on expanding their narrative universe. The Amory Wars has garnered interest for a film adaptation, with actor Mark Wahlberg and Leverage Productions involved in bringing the story to the big screen. Sanchez expressed enthusiasm about the project’s potential, stating, “The fact it’s getting that kind of attention is amazing.”
As they prepare for the release of The Afterman, Coheed And Cambria are poised to continue their legacy, bringing their unique blend of progressive sounds and storytelling to a new audience.
