Biffy Clyro Delivers Emotional Performance at Birmingham Arena

Scottish rock band Biffy Clyro captivated audiences at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham on March 14, 2024, as part of their highly anticipated Futique tour. The band opened the evening with their first two singles, “A Little Love” and “Hunting Season,” both from their latest album, released in summer 2023.

The concert, marked by dramatic lighting changes, took fans on a journey through a spectrum of emotions. Fans noted the absence of bassist James Johnston, who is currently taking time off to address mental health and addiction issues. Filling in for Johnston was session musician Naomi MacLeod, who received praise for her performance throughout the night.

The setlist showcased a blend of newer tracks and beloved classics, including “Golden Rule,” “Black Chandelier,” and “Mountains.” Frontman Simon Neil delivered powerful vocals, and the band, which has been active for three decades, maintained a remarkably fresh sound.

Fans played an active role in the performance, with many expressing their enthusiasm for the acoustic rendition of “Machines.” The audience’s participation was palpable, particularly when they sang along to the poignant lyrics: “take the pieces and build them skywards.”

Birmingham’s crowd also surprised many by generating a mosh pit, an unexpected occurrence for a larger venue but a testament to the city’s reputation as the Home of Metal.

The band did not keep fans waiting long for an encore, returning with “The Captain,” “Living Is a Problem Because Everything Dies,” and “Bubbles.” They concluded the night with an unforgettable performance of “Many of Horror,” a song that resonated deeply with attendees and is sure to linger in their minds long after the show.

Earlier in the evening, American band The Armed opened the show, followed by Soft Play, who infused the arena with their vibrant punk rock sound. The combination of acts created a dynamic atmosphere, setting the stage for a memorable night in Birmingham.
