Trump Envoy Promotes US Critical Minerals Strategy in Uzbekistan

A representative from the Trump administration is in Uzbekistan to advance the United States’ critical minerals agenda. Paolo Zampolli, appointed as the White House’s Special Envoy for Global Partnerships, arrived in Tashkent on August 28, 2025. His visit aims to foster “enduring ties that sustain the strength and vitality of US diplomacy,” as stated by the US Embassy in Tashkent.

The Trump administration has prioritized expanding trade and access to Uzbekistan’s rich mineral resources. In a previous meeting with an Uzbek journalist, Jonathan Henick, the US envoy in Tashkent, highlighted an “unprecedented level” of diplomatic engagement between the United States and Uzbekistan in early 2025.

Following his arrival, Zampolli met with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. Their discussions focused on enhancing the strategic partnership between the two nations. According to a statement from the Uzbek president’s office, “issues of the further expansion of Uzbek-American strategic partnership and multifaceted cooperation were discussed in detail.” The statement emphasized the potential for collaboration in sectors such as mineral resources, aviation, electrical engineering, agriculture, digital technologies, finance, innovation, education, and more.

The US Embassy also noted that Zampolli will engage in several public diplomacy events throughout his stay in Uzbekistan. He plans to participate in celebrations for Uzbek Independence Day, meet with members of the Uzbek national soccer team, which is set to compete in the World Cup tournament in the United States next year, and attend the opening of American Corner Tashkent. This venue aims to promote American values and strengthen cultural ties between the two countries.

Zampolli’s Background and Diplomacy Goals

Zampolli has a history of business connections with former President Donald Trump and previously served as the ambassador of the Caribbean island nation of Dominica to the United Nations.
