MoneySavingExpert Recommends Simple Steps to Cut Energy Bills
Households seeking to reduce their energy bills are encouraged to implement two straightforward measures, according to financial experts at MoneySavingExpert (MSE), founded by consumer champion Martin Lewis. The organization highlights the importance of installing thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs), which typically cost around £10, to better manage heating in individual rooms.
MSE emphasizes that controlling which rooms are heated can prevent unnecessary expenditures. “Make sure you control which rooms you heat, so you’re not wasting cash heating empty rooms,” MSE advises. By adjusting the radiator valves in areas that are not frequently used, households could save approximately £40 annually, as noted by Smart Energy GB.
Understanding Thermostatic Radiator Valves
Thermostatic radiator valves allow users to regulate the temperature in specific rooms, except for the one housing the main thermostat. When the temperature in a room exceeds the desired setting on the TRV, the valve limits or halts the flow of hot water to that radiator. This capability enables homeowners to potentially cut their heating costs significantly by managing warmth on a room-by-room basis.
While there is an initial investment in purchasing and installing these valves, MSE highlights that they often come with a frost prevention setting, indicated by a snowflake symbol. This feature ensures that a small amount of hot water continues to flow through the system even when the valve is turned off, reducing the risk of frozen pipes. MSE cautions homeowners to avoid shutting off radiators completely, as this could lead to burst pipes during extreme cold.
Practical Advice for Energy Savings
MSE advises individuals working in offices or from home to include radiator adjustments in their morning routine, ideally before 09:00, when many begin their workday. This practice is essential for those who might otherwise forget to regulate heating in seldom-used areas. For individuals working in their bedrooms, MSE suggests dressing in layers to maintain comfort while keeping the thermostat slightly lower to further reduce expenses.
Nevertheless, MSE warns against excessive heating cutbacks. Colder rooms can increase condensation levels, raising the risk of mould growth. Furthermore, appliances such as fridges and freezers may not operate effectively if room temperatures fall below 10°C.
Lastly, MSE advises those contemplating painting their radiators black to reconsider this approach. According to the Energy Saving Trust, such a method is based on a myth and is not a practical solution for energy efficiency.
By following these recommendations from MoneySavingExpert, households can make informed choices that could lead to significant savings on energy bills while ensuring a comfortable living environment.
