Majestic Wine Reports Record Sales During Festive Shopping Rush
Majestic Wine achieved its highest-ever trading day on December 23, 2024, as customers flocked to stores to purchase festive beverages. The retailer, which operates approximately 200 locations across the UK and Jersey, reported that sales surged beyond previous records, reflecting a robust demand for wine, beer, and spirits during the holiday season.
The day before Christmas Eve saw a significant number of customers making last-minute purchases, contributing to a strong festive performance. Over the five weeks leading up to December 29, overall sales rose by nearly 1 percent compared to the same period in the previous year. Notably, customer numbers increased by 11 percent, illustrating a growing interest in Majestic’s offerings. This growth contrasts sharply with the broader retail alcohol market, which, according to data from Kantar Worldpanel, experienced a contraction of 4.1 percent in December.
Challenges and Strategic Moves
This successful trading period follows a difficult financial year for Majestic Wine. The company reported a nearly 50 percent decline in pre-tax profit, falling from £14.3 million to £7.8 million. The Watford-based business attributed this decline to increased costs stemming from government tax hikes and rising national minimum wage expenses.
In a strategic move to enhance its market position, Majestic Wine acquired Vagabond, a self-pour wine bar, for £6.5 million in 2024. This acquisition aims to diversify offerings and attract a broader customer base.
The trading update from Majestic Wine highlighted a 4.8 percent increase in fine wine sales leading up to Christmas. Sales of English wines soared by 27 percent year on year, while wines from lesser-known regions such as Greece, Germany, Austria, and Hungary saw a growth of 14 percent.
Elizabeth Newman, Majestic’s Retail Managing Director, commented on the festive performance, stating that customers are “moderating their alcohol spend but seeking out better quality wines, beers, and spirits.” This shift in consumer behavior is drawing them to Majestic’s “differentiated product range” and “expert advice.”
As the festive season winds down, Majestic Wine’s record sales signify a strong connection with consumers, positioning the retailer favorably in a challenging market. The company’s focus on quality and unique offerings appears to resonate with a customer base eager for premium products, even as overall spending in the alcohol sector fluctuates.
