Gas Prices Drop Below $2 in Michigan as Stations Compete for Customers

In a remarkable display of competitive pricing, several gas stations in southeast Michigan have reduced prices to below $2 per gallon. This price drop occurred earlier this month in the city of Warren, where a newly opened Sheetz and a nearby Speedway engaged in a price war to attract local customers. Despite statewide averages remaining well above the $2 mark, the rivalry led to significant price reductions at the pump.

The Sheetz station initiated the price cuts by offering regular unleaded gasoline at just $1.79 per gallon. In response, the Speedway matched this price, prompting long lines of vehicles at the intersection of Van Dyke Avenue and 14 Mile Road. Customers who utilized the Speedway rewards program benefited further, with reported prices dropping as low as $1.68 per gallon.

While the intense competition led to fluctuating prices, an eyewitness noted that fuel costs briefly fell to $1.30 per gallon at one point. However, both stations have since increased their prices, with the last recorded rate at $2.39, still below the average of $2.49 at other stations in surrounding Macomb County, according to data from GasBuddy.

Sheetz Expands Presence in Michigan

The Sheetz brand, which is based in Pennsylvania, is relatively new to the Detroit area. It currently operates only a few locations within the city and its suburbs but has ambitious plans to establish as many as 50 to 60 additional sites by 2031. This expansion strategy reflects the growing popularity of the convenience store chain, which has already earned a reputation as one of the best in the Midwest.

Another Sheetz outlet is under construction on Mound Road and 12 Mile Road, raising the possibility of further price competition when it opens.
