Liberal Democrat Leaders Warn of Impending Crisis for River Cam

The River Cam is at risk of a “catastrophe” due to escalating sewage pollution and deteriorating infrastructure, according to Ed Davey, the leader of the Liberal Democrats. During a visit to Cambridge on August 15, 2023, he emphasized the urgent need for investment and repairs to protect this vital waterway, renowned as one of England’s precious chalk streams.
Mr. Davey described the situation as “appalling,” highlighting the significance of the River Cam in an ecological context. He noted that there are approximately 200 chalk streams in England, and this region hosts about 85 percent of the world’s chalk streams. “People have referred to chalk streams as England’s tropical rainforest, that is how important they are for our ecological success,” he stated. The pollution of these streams is a pressing concern that he believes should not be tolerated.
The leader of the Liberal Democrats pointed out that the issues plaguing the River Cam are compounded by the maintenance challenges associated with its ageing infrastructure. Earlier this year, the Conservators of the River Cam, responsible for managing a critical stretch of the river, declared itself to be in crisis. The organization reported that the financial burden of necessary repairs far exceeds its capacity.
Mr. Davey warned that failure to repair the locks could result in the river being reduced to a mere trickle. “People need to get around the table—whether it is the mayor, city council, or central government—to work out how they can fund it,” he urged. He criticized the current government for inaction, saying, “They have dragged their feet for too long.”
Local Leaders Join the Call for Action
Joining Mr. Davey in his advocacy is Councillor Cheney Payne, also a Liberal Democrat candidate for Cambridge. She expressed hope that the visit would draw attention to the pressing issues affecting the river. “The River Cam is iconic; it is an important piece of national, if not international, infrastructure,” she remarked.
Cllr Payne has initiated a petition urging the government to secure funding for essential repairs to the Jesus Green lock and Baits Bite lock. Within the first few days, the petition garnered around 300 signatures. She emphasized the need for government investment, estimating that the repairs could cost around £10 million. “For a city council, that is impossible; it wipes out your reserves. But for a government, it is actually very little,” she explained.
She added that the Labour government is currently focusing on innovation and development in Cambridge, but protecting local water resources is essential for sustainable growth. Cllr Payne implored Steve Reed, the Secretary of State for the Environment, to commit to funding the necessary repairs.
Community Engagement and Future Prospects
During his visit, Mr. Davey participated in a punting excursion along the River Cam, marking his first experience in Cambridge, although he had previously punted in Oxford. Reflecting on the experience, he noted, “I was a little bit nervous…but I managed to reach dry land, dry.” He acknowledged the appeal of punting as a popular activity that draws tourists to the city, highlighting the importance of preserving the river for both enjoyment and ecological health.
The concerns surrounding the River Cam reflect broader issues affecting waterways across the country. As communities rally around the need for immediate action, the focus remains on securing the necessary funding and support to prevent further degradation of this essential natural resource. The combined efforts of local leaders, community members, and environmental advocates are crucial in ensuring the River Cam continues to thrive for future generations.
