Broadband Price Increases for 2026: What Customers Need to Know
Broadband prices are set to rise significantly in 2026, impacting customers across major providers including BT, EE, and Sky. Following new regulations from Ofcom, consumers will have clearer insight into these mid-contract price hikes. Effective from March 31, 2026, customers who signed contracts in 2025 can expect various monthly increases, prompting many to consider switching providers to avoid higher costs.
Under Ofcom’s updated guidelines, providers must disclose potential price increases at the time contracts are signed. Previously, many consumers faced unexpected hikes linked to the consumer price index. Now, most broadband providers must state increases in clear monetary terms. Customers are advised to be aware of these changes and explore their options.
For 2026, the following monthly price increases have been confirmed:
– BT: £4
– Community Fibre: £2
– EE: £4
– Hyperoptic: £3
– Now Broadband: Not declared
– Plusnet: £4
– Sky: Not declared
– TalkTalk: £4
– Three: £2
– Virgin Media: £4
– Vodafone: £3.50
These increases apply irrespective of the original monthly cost, meaning that customers with lower rates will see a higher percentage increase than those on higher rates. Customers who signed contracts earlier in 2025 may see a £3 increase instead, as some older contracts were priced differently.
Strategies to Avoid Price Hikes
With the potential for an additional £48 in annual costs, many customers might want to secure a better deal. Researching available providers in your area is essential. In the UK, full fibre services are primarily delivered through two networks: BT Openreach, which serves BT, EE, Plusnet, Sky, Vodafone, and TalkTalk, and Virgin Media, which operates its own fibre network.
For those currently bound by contracts, EE offers up to £300 to cover early exit fees, making it a viable option for those considering a switch. Their cheapest Full Fibre package provides speeds of 74Mbps for £28.99 per month, with a £4 annual price increase.
The most economical option for many is Plusnet, offering a 74Mbps Full Fibre plan for £22.99 per month on a 24-month contract. This package also comes with a £4 annual increase. Plusnet frequently runs promotions that can include reward cards and speed boosts, making it attractive for budget-conscious customers.
Exploring the Best Packages
For consumers interested in television bundles, Sky presents competitive pricing. Their broadband starts at £26 per month for a 100Mbps connection, but when bundled with a TV package, the combined cost can be as low as £35 per month. This effectively reduces the broadband cost to £20 when purchased alongside a TV subscription.
For those looking specifically for Virgin Media, current promotions include a deal featuring free Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses. The starting price for their 132Mbps service is £23.99 per month, with similar annual increases as seen across the sector.
A crucial consideration for shoppers is determining the appropriate speed for their needs. While higher speeds like 500Mbps may seem appealing, many users can manage perfectly well with slower options. For instance, a 74Mbps connection is sufficient for streaming 4K content, as Netflix recommends a minimum of 15Mbps.
Potential customers should assess their home internet needs carefully. Conducting a speed test, both wired and over Wi-Fi, can clarify whether a broadband or Wi-Fi issue is causing connectivity problems. This simple step can help consumers avoid unnecessary expenses and find a package that aligns with their actual use.
With the upcoming price increases looming, it is essential for broadband customers to stay informed and proactive in managing their contracts. By understanding their options and being aware of the changes, consumers can navigate the evolving landscape of broadband services effectively.
