Blue Tongue Disease Confirmed on Five Farms in Montenegro

The presence of Blue Tongue Disease has been confirmed on five farms located in Montenegro’s Bijelo Polje and Berane regions. This infectious disease was detected in cattle within the localities of Femića Krš, Pripčići, Potkrajce, and Bojišta in Bijelo Polje, as well as in Zagrad in Berane.
Blue Tongue is a viral disease primarily affecting livestock, particularly cattle, sheep, and goats. It is important to note that this disease is not transmissible to humans, meaning there is no risk to public health. The condition is spread by biting midges, commonly known as mosquitoes, which serve as vectors for the virus.
Given the confirmed cases, local authorities are likely to implement measures to manage the outbreak and protect livestock. Farmers in the affected areas are encouraged to monitor their herds closely for any signs of the disease, which can include fever, swelling, and lesions.
As of now, there are no reported cases affecting human health, but the agricultural impacts could be significant if the disease spreads further. Livestock owners should remain vigilant and work closely with veterinary services to ensure the health and safety of their animals.
