Experienced Skydiver Sandro Bigozzi Dies in Tragic Fall
An experienced skydiver, Sandro Bigozzi, tragically lost his life after falling nearly 1,500 meters (approximately 5,000 feet) during a jump in Italy. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, has prompted an investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding his death. Bigozzi, aged 49, was renowned in the skydiving community, boasting nearly 6,000 jumps and a significant social media following of 50,000 on Instagram.
The fatal dive took place shortly after Bigozzi took off from an airstrip located in Montecompatri, near Rome. Just two hours prior to the incident, he had shared footage of a successful dive, showcasing his skills and passion for skydiving. Emergency services, including police, firefighters, and paramedics, responded quickly to the densely vegetated area where he crashed, but unfortunately, they were unable to save him.
Investigation Underway
Preliminary findings suggest that Bigozzi’s main parachute failed to deploy, and there may have been a malfunction with the reserve parachute or a delay in its deployment. Investigators believe that a late deployment may have prevented him from slowing down sufficiently before impact. Authorities have seized equipment related to the jump and are interviewing witnesses to gather more information.
Additionally, investigators are considering the possibility that Bigozzi may have experienced a sudden medical issue during the jump, which could have hindered his ability to respond to the situation. An autopsy is scheduled to take place in the coming days as part of the ongoing investigation into his death.
A Legacy Remembered
Originally from Grosseto, Bigozzi was not only a professional parachuting instructor but also worked as a sales representative for a pharmaceutical company. He leaves behind his wife and two young daughters, highlighting the personal loss felt by his family and community.
His final Facebook post, which reflects his deep love for the sky and sea, poignantly stated: “When I first started parachuting as a student, the sea was a dream. I wondered if I’d ever get to fly over it.” Bigozzi fulfilled a lifelong dream in 2015 by jumping alongside his grandfather and performed a tandem leap with Grosseto Mayor Antonfrancesco Vivarelli Colonna in 2018.
Mayor Vivarelli Colonna expressed his sorrow, stating, “I had the honour of flying for the first time with him: a unique experience, made unforgettable by his skill and his smile. His passion for flying was contagious, his enthusiasm genuine. Today we lose not only a professional but a special person, loved by many.” Bigozzi’s legacy will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those who knew him and in the skydiving community he passionately served.
