Jonathan Criticizes Nigerian Politics as Untrustworthy and Deceitful
Former Nigerian President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan expressed strong criticism of the current political landscape in Nigeria, describing it as rife with betrayals and dishonesty. This statement came during the 70th birthday celebration of Chief Mike Ogiadomhe, Jonathan’s former Chief of Staff and Deputy Governor of Edo State, held on March 15, 2024, in Benin City.
The gathering drew numerous dignitaries, including former governors Lucky Igbinedion, Professor Osarhiemen Osunbor, and Adams Oshiomhole, as well as Ibrahim Dakwambo of Gombe State. Other notable attendees included former deputy governors, traditional rulers, and members of the Edo State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Blessing Agbebaku.
In his remarks, Jonathan praised Ogiadomhe as a reliable ally, stating, “When I became president, one of the few friends that could give up their necks for me is Mike.” He emphasized the pervasive nature of betrayal in Nigerian politics, noting, “You find it difficult to see somebody who will say the same thing in the morning and in the evening.” Reflecting on his experiences, he recounted the betrayal he faced during the 2015 election, underscoring Ogiadomhe’s loyalty by asserting, “He is somebody that you can take his word to the bank; most other politicians, you cannot.”
The deputy governor of Edo State, Dennis Idahosa, who represented Governor Monday Okoebholo at the event, highlighted the lasting impact of Ogiadomhe’s contributions as deputy. Idahosa remarked that the foundation Ogiadomhe laid continues to be relevant today.
In further tributes, Igbinedion expressed his confidence in Ogiadomhe, stating he had no reservations about passing the reins of state affairs to him during his own travels abroad. Oshiomhole, another former governor, echoed this sentiment, revealing that he consistently told Ogiadomhe, “wherever Jonathan is, that is where I would be,” and commended Ogiadomhe’s wife, Lousia, for her steadfast support.
The event not only celebrated Ogiadomhe’s milestone birthday but also served as a platform for Jonathan to voice his concerns about Nigeria’s political integrity. As the former president underlined, the trustworthiness of political figures is critical in navigating the complexities of governance and public service in Nigeria today.
