Stoke-on-Trent Mum Transforms Garden Using Upcycled Materials

A remarkable garden transformation in Stoke-on-Trent has captured attention as local resident Joanne Mason-Henry utilized creative upcycling techniques to rejuvenate her outdoor space. With a budget of nearly £750, the 53-year-old kitchen porter transformed her once drab garden into a vibrant retreat, showcasing how innovation can flourish even in the face of adversity.
Joanne’s journey began in 2016 when she moved into her semi-detached council house with her two sons, Jude and Noah. At that time, the garden was “awful,” and her attempts to maintain it were often thwarted by her seven-year-old spaniel, Stan, who loved digging. Fast forward to 2022, and Joanne decided it was time for a significant change. Armed with determination and a desire for minimal maintenance due to her arthritis, she embarked on a project that would ultimately redefine her family’s outdoor experience.
Joanne’s first step involved hiring a mini digger for £80 to level the ground. She then laid down a membrane, purchased online for £50, to prepare the soil. Faced with a dilapidated fence that would cost £700 to repair, she opted for a more economical solution. “I just bought two rolls of strong bamboo sheeting for about £30 a pack and attached it with flat metal wire,” she explained. This creative approach has proven resilient; even after three years, it remains intact despite severe weather conditions.
Next, Joanne focused on the patio area, sourcing large Indian sandstone slabs for £100 from a friend. This purchase held sentimental value, as the slabs belonged to a friend who passed away during the Covid pandemic. “I thought firstly, I can use these, and secondly, I’ve got a little bit of my friend in my garden,” she shared. Although positioning the slabs was challenging due to her condition, she persevered by working on them gradually, creating a rustic aesthetic that she appreciates.
The innovative use of empty beer bottles emerged as one of the highlights of her project. Joanne crafted a unique border from these upcycled materials, which she received for free from the Bleeding Wolf pub, where she works. “I was thinking what could I do that would be cheap and would look pretty,” she said. After soaking off the labels, she easily installed the bottles upside down into the ground, proving that sustainability and creativity can coexist beautifully.
Despite lacking gardening experience, Joanne selected potted bedding plants from her local supermarket, often purchasing those marked down to as little as 10 pence. “They come back to life if you water them,” she explained. Additionally, she constructed a wildlife pond using a large plastic container, which has since become a haven for local wildlife, including frogs and snails, showcasing her commitment to creating an environmentally friendly garden.
Her final touches included a garden shed, which she adorned with decorative shower curtains and artificial ivy, purchased online for about £20. The shed, along with cheap solar lights, completed her garden’s transformation into a space that now invites relaxation. “We were never able to enjoy our garden before, even during the summer,” Joanne noted. “It’s beautiful now.”
Joanne Mason-Henry’s story highlights the potential for creativity in home improvement, demonstrating that with determination, resourcefulness, and a little imagination, even the most neglected spaces can become cherished retreats. Her garden stands as a testament to her resilience and ingenuity, inspiring others to embrace their own projects, regardless of their experience level.
