Rangers Invest £20 Million to Strengthen Squad Amid Challenges

Rangers have committed a substantial £20 million in net spending to enhance their squad as they navigate a challenging start to the season. Sporting director Kevin Thelwell expressed confidence that the investment will yield positive outcomes, despite the team’s recent struggles, including three wins out of eleven matches under head coach Russell Martin.
Thelwell highlighted the backing from the club’s new American investors, which has allowed Rangers to sign fourteen players. Key departures include strikers Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane, among others. “I’m pleased with the business that we’ve done,” Thelwell stated in an interview with RangersTV. “There’s a nice balance within the group. We have young, hungry players that can help us now but can also develop, and we have brought in some senior players that should help the group chemistry.”
This significant investment aims to improve the team across all areas. Thelwell emphasized that while the club has received transfer fees for players like Igamane and Dessers, the net spending reflects a strong commitment to building a competitive squad. “I think it’s a circa £20 million net spend, which is a big number in our concept,” he noted. “Fans should see that in a positive way. It sends a clear message about what we want to do and that the ownership are committed to building a stronger team.”
Despite the financial commitment, Thelwell cautioned that fans should manage their expectations regarding future spending. “You can’t expect ownership to spend year-on-year in that way,” he explained. His experience at various clubs, including Preston, Derby, Wolves, New York Red Bulls, and Everton, has shaped his approach to squad building and management.
Thelwell praised Martin, describing him as “one of the best” managers he has worked with. “He’s very good on the grass, very well organised, he’s extremely high energy,” Thelwell remarked. “He gives time to players, wants to develop players. He cares about the group, he cares about the results and performances.” However, Thelwell acknowledged the need for improvement, especially after the team fell six points behind rivals Celtic and suffered a heavy aggregate defeat of 9-1 against Club Brugge in the Champions League qualifying rounds.
“What we’ve delivered so far hasn’t been good enough,” he admitted. “I can’t say we need patience; we haven’t earned that. But there needs to be some perspective.” Thelwell noted that the rapid changes within the club could lead to some volatility and inconsistency in performance.
Despite the current challenges, he assured fans that there is strong alignment within the club’s leadership and ownership. “There is a huge amount of alignment within this building, huge alignment with leadership and ownership that believes we are heading in the right direction and believe we can deliver the success everyone craves,” he stated.
As Rangers look to stabilize their performance, the investment in new talent may be crucial in turning their season around and competing effectively in both domestic and European competitions. The coming weeks will be pivotal as the team seeks to translate their financial commitment into on-field success.
