Kneecap Calls Out Politicians During Electric Picnic Performance

The Belfast-based hip-hop group Kneecap delivered a powerful performance at the Electric Picnic festival in Stradbally, Co Laois, on the afternoon of September 1, 2023. Despite heavy rain, thousands gathered to witness the trio’s compelling set, which included pointed political commentary. Frontman Liam Ó hAnnaidh emphasized the importance of using their platform for advocacy, stating, “We’re all here enjoying ourselves… But our brothers and sisters in Palestine are under tremendous f****** pressure right now.” He criticized the inaction of elected representatives, calling out specific parties for their failure to address both the housing crisis in Ireland and the situation in Palestine.

“Netanyahu is a war criminal. It’s about time politicians started doing something about it,” said Ó hAnnaidh, highlighting the urgency of the issues at hand.

He expressed frustration with the lack of response from political leaders, specifically targeting Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael. “So f*** Micheál Martin,” he added, aligning their message with the sentiments of many in the crowd.

Electric Picnic’s Commitment to Freedom of Expression

Prior to the performance, Melvin Benn, the festival’s organizer, affirmed his commitment to free expression, stating that there would be no censorship of Kneecap. “Mics won’t be switched off. They’ve got really important songs…and important messages,” Benn remarked, defending the band’s right to voice their opinions.

Kneecap’s performance followed their appearance at a homecoming show in Belfast just a day earlier, where they served as a support act for Fontaines DC. During that concert, Ó Cairealláin humorously acknowledged the unintended publicity garnered from the DUP, saying, “You couldn’t pay for the PR the DUP give Kneecap.” He further criticized the Alliance Party, suggesting they need to reevaluate their alignment with the DUP.
