An easyJet flight from Manchester Airport to Alicante was unexpectedly diverted to London Gatwick just 30 minutes into its journey due to an “extraordinary” emergency concerning a passenger on board. The flight, which took off shortly after 18:00 on August 16, was forced to turn back over the English Channel before landing safely at Gatwick.

Flight tracking data from FlightRadar24 indicated the aircraft initially followed a southward path over Birmingham and the south coast before making a loop back to London. In a statement, easyJet acknowledged the disruption and expressed apologies to the passengers, noting that the diversion was necessitated by a passenger welfare issue. The airline stated, “We’re very sorry that your flight has now been diverted to London Gatwick airport. This is due to a passenger welfare issue. The disruption to your flight is outside of our control and is considered to be an extraordinary circumstance.”

Previous Incidents at Manchester Airport

This incident follows an earlier disruption at Manchester Airport earlier in the month, where two easyJet planes collided while taxiing on the runway. The collision occurred on August 16, prompting a temporary halt to all flights as safety checks were conducted. Passengers reported witnessing the impact, with one traveler stating, “Just on the plane at Manchester Airport and another plane has just hit our wing and took the wing off.”

In response to the collision, easyJet confirmed that the wing tips of the two aircraft made contact, leading to the decision to return to the stand and disembark passengers. The airline provided refreshment vouchers and arranged replacement aircraft for those affected by the delays. An easyJet spokesperson emphasized, “The safety of our passengers and crew is our highest priority.”

This recent series of incidents has heightened concerns among travelers regarding operational safety at Manchester Airport. Passengers are advised to remain vigilant and prepared for potential disruptions as airlines navigate the complexities of safe air travel.
