Scottish Government Expands Funding for Start-Ups to £1.2 Million

The Scottish Government has announced an extension of funding for start-ups, pledging £1.2 million for the current year and committing to the same funding level through to 2028. The announcement was made by Deputy First Minister Ms. Forbes during a visit to the headquarters of Ooni Ltd in Edinburgh, a company known for its innovative at-home pizza ovens and a previous recipient of funding from the Scottish EDGE awards.

Since its inception in 2012, the Scottish EDGE awards have distributed over £29 million to more than 700 businesses. This initiative offers grants and loans ranging from £10,000 to £150,000, specifically aimed at supporting start-ups, social enterprises, and charities. The funding is intended to be matched on a pound-for-pound basis by the private sector over the next three years.

During her visit, Ms. Forbes emphasized the vital role entrepreneurs and start-up companies play in the economy. She stated, “I have been consistently clear that entrepreneurs and start-up companies are the backbone of our economy – but they need the right support at the right time to ensure they can develop, grow and prosper.” Ms. Forbes highlighted the importance of continued support for the start-up community, noting that the Scottish EDGE awards have helped numerous businesses like Ooni achieve success.

Impact on the Start-Up Ecosystem

The Deputy First Minister noted that the Scottish Government is making record investments in entrepreneurship this year. Multiple independent sources have indicated a thriving start-up community within Scotland. Ms. Forbes expressed her satisfaction in extending support for the awards, ensuring they continue to benefit aspiring entrepreneurs through to 2028.

Evelyn McDonald, Chief Executive Officer of Scottish EDGE, acknowledged the significant role the Scottish Government has played since the inception of the competition. She remarked, “The accomplishments and global growth of businesses like Ooni, who were relatively early winners, is testament to the wide-reaching impact funding can have on a business in those crucial early stages.” McDonald believes that the Scottish Government’s commitment will benefit the economy and help leverage additional private sector investments.

Ooni’s co-founder and co-CEO, Darina Garland, shared her perspective on the importance of support during the company’s early years. “Since 2012, Ooni has grown from a tiny yet ambitious start-up to the global innovative home cookware company we are today,” she said. Garland credited the support from Scottish EDGE as instrumental in their journey, particularly in facilitating initial intellectual property development and mentorship.

The extended funding commitment aims to empower more ambitious entrepreneurs in Scotland, allowing them to achieve their potential and further contribute to the economy. McDonald and Garland both expressed confidence that this additional financial backing will help foster a robust ecosystem for start-ups.
