Jamie Jewitt Reflects on Fatherhood: Love Grows Over Time

Jamie Jewitt, known for his appearance on the reality show Love Island, has opened up about his initial feelings of disconnect after the birth of his three children. Jewitt, 34, and his wife, Camilla Thurlow, started their relationship during the 2017 season of the show and welcomed their first daughter, Nell, in 2020, followed by Nora and Brodie.
In a heartfelt post on his Substack, Jewitt shared his candid thoughts on becoming a father and the expectations surrounding that experience. He described the moment of welcoming his first child as anything but the “Hollywood moment” often portrayed in films, where new fathers are overwhelmed with immediate love and affection. Instead, he recalled a sense of confusion and distance.
Jewitt wrote, “You’re standing in a room that smells like bleach and adrenaline, watching the love of your life go through something you can barely comprehend.” He expressed that his first thought upon holding his newborn was, “Oh… so this is it?” This admission challenges the widespread notion that all new dads should feel an instantaneous bond with their children.
The reality TV star articulated a critical perspective on the societal expectations placed upon fathers. He asserted, “We’ve been fed a lie. A dangerous, damaging, and ironically, well-intentioned lie.” He pointed out that mothers undergo significant hormonal and emotional changes during pregnancy, which naturally prepares them for motherhood, while fathers often find themselves adjusting to the idea of parenthood only when the baby arrives.
Jewitt emphasized that many fathers experience a gradual development of love through everyday interactions rather than an immediate rush of emotion. He explained, “That’s the secret no one tells you: love predominantly grows in the doing.” He highlighted the nurturing aspects of fatherhood, such as late-night bottle feeds and witnessing a child’s first smile, as essential to building a strong connection.
Reflecting on his journey, Jewitt shared that the bond he has with his children was not formed overnight. “It didn’t happen the day my child was born,” he remarked. “It happened after weeks of showing up through the self-doubt and battles with that internal monologue.” Over time, he realized he had become a significant presence in his daughter’s life, stating, “I had slowly and assuredly snuck into the spotlight.”
Jewitt’s insights aim to alleviate the pressure many new fathers feel if they do not experience immediate emotional connections with their children. He reassured them, “If you’re a new dad and you’re not feeling it yet, relax. There’s nothing wrong with you. You’re not broken. You’re just not done.”
The message he hopes to convey is one of patience and commitment. He encourages fathers to continue to engage with their children, asserting that true love evolves through shared experiences. “Give it time. Show up. Keep showing up,” he advised. “Because when that connection does hit, it won’t be because the world told you to feel it. It’ll be because you built it.”
As he continues to navigate fatherhood, Jewitt remains dedicated to becoming the best dad possible, driven by genuine love for his children. His reflections shed light on the complexities of modern fatherhood and the realities many new dads face, fostering a deeper understanding of the emotional journey of parenting.
